Sound card not detected

I just installed XP on my computer, and now it won't play any music. It tells me there is no soundcard. However, I do have a soundcard, but maybe it isn't installed.

How do I install a sound card?

Is the sound "card" integrated in the chipset of the motherboard? If so it could be that you need to go to your BIOS options and enable it there, then on a restart Windows will be able to detect it and load the appropriate drivers.
 
Well, while I DID figure out how to change my BIOS options, my sound still isn't working.

Is there a way to check what sound card is in your computer if your computer can't detect it?

Try using Aida32 Sysinfo Tool. It's free for personal use.
 
Is it an onboard sound card or a PCI card?
If you have a PCI card and your motherboard has a built in card, you have to disable the built in card with jumper settings. Is this a reinstall of winxp with the sound working previously?
 
Does the Sound Card show up in the Device Manager- No yellow Question marks?

Start/Settings/Control Panel/System/Hardware/Device Manager?

You need to find that out first, then go from there.

Ok.
Do a windows update to see if there are drivers available for it.

If you still are having problems, answer these questions.

What is the make and model of your computer.
If you built it yourself what is the motherboard.
Is it an onboard sound card?
If not, is it a PCI or ISA (winxp does not support ISA sound cards, to my knowledge) and what is the brand and model name.
