Poor Ebay. They are caught in the middle of the social paradigm we are trying to break: that religion deserves special consideration over other superstitions.
Reading this also brings another point. Whenever someone mentions something as a proof for some theory, certain things they mention raise red flags. If someone who is discussing the existence of the afterlife even mentions John Edward in a favorable light, I know what courses of actions they usually choose and I react accordingly. I almost unconsciously dismiss their argument. The mention of certain people just triggers reactions.
Therefore, when the man selling his soul mentioned the JREFMDP, I empathically imagined the Ebay PR woman thinking, "Oh god, it's one of those Randi fans!" Not that our mission is any less important, that's just the image I get. Zealotry is seldom pleasant.
