I was actually on Wonderama, with my friends Thomas, Josh and Dino. My mother got us the tickets. There was a fuss, as first she only had three, but Dino felt left out, so she got another one for him.

On the show, I was even interviewed by Sonny Fox. I remember having said that I liked sirloin. Afterward, he gave me an oversized canister made up to look like a jar of Skippy peanut butter. Like one of those old Charles Chips containters, but painted.

But then, during the commercial break (as if giving a kid an oversized canister labeled Skippy weren't in itself a commercial), he came up the aisle and tried to take it back. I held on and hollered and wouldn't let go, and eventually he went away.

It almost makes me want to go to TAM just so I can heckle the weasel.

Do you still have that canister? It's probably worth hundreds of dollars on e-bay now.

No. Unfortunately, I lost it during a theft. It was the same theft when they took that Phaser I had built when I was 15.

What is it with burglers and phasers? Our house was broken into about 15 years ago and the culprits made off with the phaser ii my dad had picked up at a Star Trek convention. It was a great piece, with working lights and sounds and everything. Bastards! At least he was able to replace it (fourteen and a half years later) with an equally tricked out version from Master Replicas.

Beats me.

I haven't replaced my Phaser I yet. I did make some of the parts, though, if I ever get the vim up to finish it. This time I'm using 1/8 inch slumped Plexiglas with three pieces. I never liked how the seams looked with the original, which required 7 pieces of 1/4 inch Plexiglas. Also, advances in battery technology mean that I won't have to use hearing-aid cells any more. And I can actually get lasers and blue LEDs today.

I've never, however, been able quite to replicate the sound of the original, which used two 555 timers and a transistor and capacitor circuit for the overload whine.

What kind of thief makes off with phasers and giant canisters made to look like peanut butter jars? A Trekkie crack whore?

:D
