A group of rich Germans has launched a petition calling for the government to make wealthy people pay higher taxes.

The group say they have more money than they need, and the extra revenue could fund economic and social programmes to aid Germany's economic recovery.

Germany could raise 100bn euros (£91bn) if the richest people paid a 5% wealth tax for two years, they say.
Interesting.

Is something stopping them from giving now? Some obscure rule prevents them from either donating to the government or engaging in charity work?

I thought Germany abolished wealth tax not too long ago.

If it was reintroduced, the value of rich Germans' portfolios would probably take a sudden inexplicable dive.

They claim 2,2 million people could have this tax applied. 44 of them are involved in calling for it to be introduced. The other 99.998% presumably would not volunteer, and the 44 would need to chip in just over EUR2 billion each :)

Then they'd better start working harder.
