Wow...I mean really? What's next? Flying Spaghetti Monster was Cthulhu's child?

I think it depends on what you mean by "take off." As far as mainstream "ahmagerd I seen Slendy!" goes, it didn't take off. But as far as the fanbase goes, Slenderman has gained a lot of popularity and seems to have become entrenched in the Creepypasta world. There have been fan games made based around the character, and Slenderman has shown up in other works as well. Really quite a fascinating case, I love it.
Oh no, that's not what I meant; yes, as a fictional character there is a large fanbase, and I know of a few "internet television series" featuring or mentioning His Slendiness.
I was indeed referring to whether or not the phenomenon had entered the "RL woo" zeitgeist as it were, which it has not.
Back in the early 80s, my wife and I were both reading a lot of horror fiction. A collection called Dark Forces had come out, and it was really good; stories by most of the working authors then.
We read a number of other collections as well... Which is unfortunate because I can't remember which one this particular story was in, or it's title...
But anyway, it was about those "skinny houses" you see in some cities. We have 'em here; we always called 'em "shotgun houses" because you could shoot straight through, one end to the other...
The story was about the residents of these odd homes, tall, slender men who "unfolded" as they came out, always at night.....
An influence, perhaps?
I suspect the "black-eyed kids" story began the same way - an isolated "creepy tale" that inspired a bunch of what basically amounts to fanfic.
In fairness, the "Slender Man" clips are dated 2009, which if I'm not mistaken was when the thing first came out. If the show hasn't covered this figure since, it's probably safe to say it didn't "take off"; I can find no stories or mentions of the slender dude online that aren't obviously intended to be recognized as creepy storytelling (as opposed to "this actually happened to me").
How long until we start hearing credulous tales of SCPs from folks oblivious to their origins?
