Slenderman on Coast to Coast

lol.

Wasn't this the result of a thread on a forum asking for people to create spooky photoshops ?

It's almost humorous to see this take off. It's the sasquatch of the online generation!

I suspect the "black-eyed kids" story began the same way - an isolated "creepy tale" that inspired a bunch of what basically amounts to fanfic.

In fairness, the "Slender Man" clips are dated 2009, which if I'm not mistaken was when the thing first came out. If the show hasn't covered this figure since, it's probably safe to say it didn't "take off"; I can find no stories or mentions of the slender dude online that aren't obviously intended to be recognized as creepy storytelling (as opposed to "this actually happened to me").

I think it depends on what you mean by "take off." As far as mainstream "ahmagerd I seen Slendy!" goes, it didn't take off. But as far as the fanbase goes, Slenderman has gained a lot of popularity and seems to have become entrenched in the Creepypasta world. There have been fan games made based around the character, and Slenderman has shown up in other works as well. Really quite a fascinating case, I love it.

How long until we start hearing credulous tales of SCPs from folks oblivious to their origins?

Oh no, that's not what I meant; yes, as a fictional character there is a large fanbase, and I know of a few "internet television series" featuring or mentioning His Slendiness.

I was indeed referring to whether or not the phenomenon had entered the "RL woo" zeitgeist as it were, which it has not.

I thought that's what you meant, hehe. I'd be rather tickled if Slendy made the transition into "RL Woo" as you put it. I wouldn't be surprised, really.

I have seen a couple of isolated cases of people claiming to have seen Slender Man and/or that Victor Surge took a real case and made out that it was his invention. It's certainly not mainstream, but there are those who buy in to it.

Funny old world.

Back in the early 80s, my wife and I were both reading a lot of horror fiction. A collection called Dark Forces had come out, and it was really good; stories by most of the working authors then.
We read a number of other collections as well... Which is unfortunate because I can't remember which one this particular story was in, or it's title...

But anyway, it was about those "skinny houses" you see in some cities. We have 'em here; we always called 'em "shotgun houses" because you could shoot straight through, one end to the other...
The story was about the residents of these odd homes, tall, slender men who "unfolded" as they came out, always at night.....
An influence, perhaps?

There's an hour-long interview with Victor Surge on YouTube somewhere, and he doesn't mention it amongst the influences. Judging by your avatar, you might be interested to know that one of the influences he does mention is Lovecraft and Cthulhu.

Really? I would like to know how that originated since I know someone who bought into that story as being fact...as well as werewolves.

On another forum, some people have fun leaving SCP cards and stickers on surfaces:

The hotline is actually functional with a voicemail message, and some of the transcripts are hilarious.

And making some art exhibits and 'losing' cards around it;

I saw a Tweet last week, can't remember who it was from: You know we Americans have an obesity problem when the scariest thing we can think of is a slender man.
