We had a thread when the story of men being held in slavery by a group of travellers broke a while ago.
Yesterday four people, Patrick Connors, his sister Josie, father Tommy Snr and Josie's husband James John Connors were found guilty of forcing people into servitude.
As I understand it, they would pick up homeless men and promise them somewhere to sleep and money - then refuse to release them, force them to work very long hours for little or no pay and very little food.

That seems rather suspicious...he says he doesn't own any, but says nothing about leasing or renting them...

It still seems better than working in a Nike factory in a third world country.

Oh yes. These things only happen in Britain of course. :rolleyes:
 
How did none of the slaves manage to escape and contact the police? They were outdoor workers (block pavers) and door to door salesmen. They were outdoors and interacting with presumably sane people. I realize that individuals can be conditioned to accept just about anything, and that captives often do this sort of thing, but I guess it's surprising that not one of the 100+ slaves escaped and told the police. Or just said to a customer as they sold things door to door, "Hey, I'm being held captive in a gypsy camp where they lock me in a horse trailer and I sleep in my own excrement. Any chance you could call the cops?" Heck, on an outdoor job site, you could wait until there is a witness nearby and just walk away. They might beat you up, but the witness would call the cops.

I wasn't one of the captives, and if I had been, I probably would have just been another sheep like them rather than the "Freedom lovin' 'Merican" I'd like to think I am, but jeez...

When I spent my summers in Ireland in the 1970s my grandmother always warned us to stay away from the "tinkers". Now we have these disgusting criminals in the U.S. too, but they are less brazen than they appear to be in Britain or Ireland. Why? Because we are bad-ass Americans who would just beat the you-know-what out of the whole community (think Anakin Skywalker and the Sand People). You Brits are just too nice, too liberal! :)

Actually, in 2006, Britain was the country with the lowest amount of rotten teeth per capita at the age of 12.

However, unlike USA, they don't bother doing what is basically unnecessary tooth work. Because no matter what Hollywood, television, and ad pictures try to tell you, crooked teeth or teeth that aren't entirely white can still be perfectly healthy and functional. Heck, often doing the stuff that gives you two perfectly aligned rows of pearly whites can be bad for your teeth.

The BBC managed to tell the entire story without once mentioning that the criminals were gypsies. No surprise there. I don't know what it's like abroad but in the UK the travellers are a bane on their neighbourhoods. I once talked to a retired police officer who told me that at one point 96% of all crime on his manor was committed by a single extended gypsy family. Through an acquaintance I know of a widowed farmer's wife who was repeatedly threatened by gypsies who plundered her farm over several months, walking in and robbing whatever they liked to the tune of thousands of pounds-worth of stuff. The police didn't even investigate until one day the woman confronted the gypsies with a shotgun. Then the police did act - they arrested her and confiscated all her legally held guns. And one more thing, don't use slang terms when talking about travellers, it will land you in court -
