Linux users may have found that they can not log on to the skype network anymore without ungrading their software. Unfortunately, when they do, they don't have mike or sound.

It appears that Microsoft will not allow skype software that accesses ALSA to login to the network anymore (hence the need for new software). The new software will only use Pulse Audio.

Although it is possible to install Pulse Audio on linux machines, it is a difficult process to set up and likely to play havoc with existing software that uses ALSA.

Here is a forum that discusses the technical difficulties: http://www.linuxquestions.org/questions/slackware-14/skype-4-3-a-4175508618/

You make it sound obscure or odd. It is default on Ubuntu, Fedora, openSUSE (Gnome), etc. It certainly has its detractors, but we should bear in mind that it exists as it does for a reason, namely that Linux audio is a mess.

Are you referring to skype or Pulse Audio?

The changes to skype have only been made in the past few weeks. If it is standard on ubuntu, have you personally verified that it is still working on the current version?

I've got an Ubuntu 14.04 box running. I can confirm that Pulseaudio is standard. I'm not sure if Skype is working on it, since its main role is file/print/game stream/developement server on my LAN and my headset wire simply aint that long not to mention I can also confirm that ALSA have to be installed manually. I know. I had plenty of problems getting wine to work with pulseaudio and had to switch. Pain in the keister.

From the forum I mentioned earlier, I got this workaround:
Hi, if anyone need to continue using old version of skype (4.2.x), these steps works for me:

* remove skype 4.2.x version
* install skype 4.3.x version
* connect and mark to "auto connect" on next time
* click Exit (don't disconnect)
* remove skype 4.3.x
* install again skype 4.2.x version
* now the skype will connect automatically
* NEVER DISCONNECT when exit

* This is my first post, sorry for anything.

Maybe sometime in the future, I will install pulseaudio (the forum shows how) but alsa and pulseaudio don't work together so I'm in no hurry.
