CANCER expert Prof Ian Frazer is on the verge of a major breakthrough in skin cancer - he hopes to develop a vaccine within a year.

The former Australian of the Year and creator of the world's first cervical cancer vaccine, Gardasil, has developed a world-first strategy to combat the insidious disease that affects two out of three Australians.

"In my lifetime we should be able to remove the threat of skin cancer from the next generation," the 57-year-old immunology professor said.

Interesting but a long way off from an actual product. It would be great to have an effective and safe vaccine for melanoma; I'd get it in a heartbeat.

Is he talking about melanoma, the fatal kind, or the squamous and basal types that seldom kill and are prevented by sun block?

Ok, I'll go read the link....

Ok, sounds like a good point. And six months away from the completion of studies that will define which virus causes which cancer. Almost overnight. Especially if it is a virus we are already capable of controlling.

Anybody got any death stats on melanoma? Or is this another HPV type thing, few people die, QALY is mega dollars.

eta- Melanoma deaths in the USA, about double cervical cancer deaths at 9,000 vs 4000, IIRC.

The vaccine might be a long way off, but that only says we need to get started on it now. The only downside is that bitch Meryl Dorey will probably spew some crap like, "Melanoma didn't kill your parents, and it won't kill you."

Interesting. I wonder how many cancers have viral triggers? At least from the quotes it sounds like Ian already knows what the sequencing will find, he's just waiting for confirmation.

(ps Ian Frazer is an old friend of mine, we used to work together, hence the use of his first name)

Cool!

If he manages to work this vaccine out, I suspect a Nobel prize might be headed his way in some years.

Personally I think he and Jian Zhou (who unfortunately died before he saw his work reach fruition) should already be in consideration thanks to their cervical cancer vaccine. Unless you happen to be first black President of the US, Nobel prizes tend to come a long time after the work they recognize :)

Definitely! I've seen what melanoma can do to a skeleton, and I've got every risk factor except naturally red hair. Only coming out at night can only help so much!
