Hello!

I'm Dr. Mabuse of the Skepticality Forum, and Skeptic Friends Network.
Kiless suggested I post my "errand/request" here in the "The Amaz!ng Meeting! and other Skeptical Events" forum.

I've been asked and invited to Dragon*Con 2007 by Derek Colanduno of Skepticality Podcast to collect an award for the services I've done for the Skepticality Forum. Unfortunately, I can't afford the trip because of my economy, and the fact that I live in Europe.
Derek and Swoopy is assisting me by helping me organise a fundraiser to get me to Dragon*Con.
Kiless suggested I post a fund-raise announcement here on JREF also, since there will be several Skeptical events at Dragon*Con. Derek promised he'd arrange for me to meet Michael Shermer who will also be attending.

Derek Colanduno of Skepticality Podcast have on many occasions said that he'd like me to come to Dragon*Con to collect an award for "Administering" Skepticality's Forum above and beyond the call of duty.
(Remember the problems we had with the forum software, modifications of it like anti-spam upgrades, and all the times the databases crashed like when Derek's account disappeared together with some hundred threads and thousands of posts, which I managed to restore)

My response is this:

"I would gladly come to Dragon*Con to collect the prize. However, since I'm living in Sweden, on the other side of the Atlantic, coming to Dragon*Con in order to pick up a prize is a bit over the top. I simply don't have the economical means to do that. Unless...

Unless I get some help.
Skeptic Friends Network did a fundraiser that sent one of it's founders, Kil, to TAM5.
Now I'm hoping that you can do the same for me.
Derek and Swoopy have graciously donated space and promotion of the idea to sponsor my trip to Dragon*Con.

If I eventually get there, Derek has promised to hook me up with Michael Shermer (whom you all know) and Tracy Hickman, one of my favourite authors.

I'm asking for a donation to make this trip possible, and a dream come true.
The donation is meant to cover the cost of transportation (flight and connections), hotel and entry to Dragon*con, estimated to $1750US. I will probably go even if donation-target isn't reached, however, I do not know at this time where the lower limit will be (I'll be nagging my boss for overtime to save for the ticket..). In case I cannot go, the entire fund will be deposited at Skepticality's donation fund.
Any donations collected that exceeds this amount will be donated to Skepticality (to pay for web-hosting, forum software - which isn't free anymore, and other skeptic promotion).

Thank you very much!
Dr. Mabuse"

The fundraise can be found in this thread at the Skepticality Forum.

Hey Dr. Mab!

Nice to see you out here gathering support man. Myself and Swoopy really hope you can make it out to see and meet all the cool Skeptics at the Dragon*Con events. You have been such a important of our show in the past few years, and it would be great to see you out here at the convention!

Hope things go well... Go Dr. Go! :)

Here’s hoping you make it Mab! You stepped up when Skepticality really needed you and helped to keep the wheels turning. For Derek and Swoopy but mostly for you, I will be happy to do my part…

Good luck at reaching your goal!

The fundraise is picking up steam, and I cannot begin to tell you how excited and grateful I am for this!

It really looks like I'll be going! :faint:

:)

Thank you everyone for contributing!

I'm halfway to target, on the fundraise, and with a little luck, I'll get all the way. The excitement is rising, and in preparation for the trip I've now taken the vaccine-shots that I'm recomended to have when travelling abroad. :covereyes

One Skepticality member recently asked: "Is the meter up-to-date?"

Yes, the meter is up to date*. It hasn't changed for the last 2 weeks, because there hasn't been any more contributions.
However, we are half-way to the target!
That is reason for celebration!

If I clear out my in-case-of-emergency account, I just might have enough to go! It will make a big dent in my economy, but it really looks like I'll be going!
YAY!

(Donations are still welcome...)
* I recieve an e-mail notice of each donation, and every time I get one, I immediately update the meter and an Excel-document for statistics. Currently, $100 is the highest donated amount in any single transaction ($120 from one person in total), $10 is the lowest, and the average is $58.

If more people started donating a lower-than-average amount, the average will get lower. Let's see how much we can get the average to drop... :D The smaller the contribution, the better!

I knew the empire was crumbling. Now people need shots to come to the US!

;)

Dr. Mabuse, I already donated a wee bit of money to help get you to D*C.

However, I wish to add that, if we meet in person, and I think you are a cool, worthy fellow, I might give you some more cash to help pay for the trip back. What do you think?

Wowbagger, if we meet, I'd be happy to chat with you.
I'll probably be wearing a Skeptic Friends Network T-shirt (with the letters SFN over the Earth), or a T-shirt with "'Ol Yellow Eyes is Back Again".

This post officially close the Fund Raise To Bring Dr. Mabuse to Dragon*Con 2007.

The fund raise was enough to get me to Dragon*Con!

Since the target was not reached, and I had to drain an in-case-of-emergency account in order to go, I will still accept donations to replenish that account. However, my promise still stands that any amount exceeding the originally stated target will be donated to Skepticality.

Thank you everyone for your contributions!
