So it seems that Berlusconi, the Italian Prime Minster, is getting investigated in a teenage prostitution ring. Why is it every time I hear the term 'dential hygienists' in conversation, it's about sex somehow?

I didn't see this anywhere, but thought it would be a good discussion. Here is a link to a Guardian UK article on it.

Berlisconi has been rather amazing, hasn't he? Touring Europe with his mistress while his wife sits at home; shamelessly denying other candidates airtime on his self-owned media empire, scandal after scandal...
Maybe the Italians just like their bad boys.... After all, this is a country where prostitutes have their own political party.

I am constantly amazed at that man being in power so long in a western democracy.

I think he subscribes to this point of view.

The main point being that, "that he got to live like a god for three decades! Sure the last ten minutes sucked..."

Hopefully his 'last ten minutes' is actually fifteen years.

A party that opposes prostitutes under 18 which lead to specific penalties for such other than normal prostitution laws.

I was actually in Italy when that guy smashed him with the statue thing. One of the funniest things I have ever seen. He is a nasty piece of crap.

Speaking to some Italians (approx 10 of them) in London a couple of months ago, they were amazed how much we in the UK knew about him - more than most Italians did, and they added that an increasing number of Italians were using foreign news to find out what was actually going on in their country.

A bit sad and worrying really.

Well control of the media does help.

But whats the alturnative? The left is too fragmented to actualy do anything and the right is a mix of stuff created by Berlusconi and oddities like the Lega Nord.

Berlusconi is claiming these are manufactured charges by political rivals.

The girl is denying that they ever had sex now, although she is saying he gave her around $30,000 shortly after meeting.

Italians get their news from TV and the channels are owned by uncle Silvio.

They have no idea what damage he has done to Italy's image abroad. For instance: most of them missed the episode where Angela Merckel is waiting to greet him at the end of the red carpet, Berlusconi gets out of the car and decides to take a phone call instead of greeting her.
Check it out on Youtube, it's gold.

Another important factor is that the Italian left really is left-winged.
A collection of miniature parties that disagree with each other on minor philosophical stuff that nobody outside some college dorms cares about.
They give their parties cute and alternative names to emphasise how un-nationalistic they are.
When you feel ready to vote for a party of insulated ex-communists, turned anarcho-syndicalists who have named their political party 'The Little Elephant', let me know.

Berlusconi is also capable of running a government that doesn't fall apart every three months. Which Italians find refreshing. Having to vote in a new government four times a year gets a bit old after a while.

More on the 'bunga bunga' parties. Apparently, it was even worse than the press is reporting.

From the article, "During another intercepted call, Miss El Mahroug said that she started seeing the prime minister when she was just 16, apparently contradicting her public statements that she attended only one or two parties last year and that she was 17 at the time.

"I've been going to his home since I was 16 but I've always denied everything," she said. "

Yeah, not looking good for him.

"There were orgies in there, not with drugs as far as I know. But they were all drinking, half undressed. By the end...the girls had no bras on and were wearing only those tight knickers," said Mr Ferrigno, a former anti-racket commissioner and prefect of Naples who is not under investigation.

Wish i had enough money to buy myself a whole prostitute orgy...

The impression I get in a nutshell of the situation with Berlusconi is that he's basically running the government like a fiefdom, and when opposition told him to leave and his answer was, "No", their reply was essentially, "Oh ok, well I guess you can stay because we've exhausted all our options!"

I admit I'm biased as most of my updates about him are from a friend in Italy, but is this the impression anybody else has gotten?

Not really, my impression is that there wasn't a unified opposition, so there was no significant opposing force against him, and with his control of the media and government there's none likely to develop. I find it hard to believe this latest sexcapade will go anywhere.
