Should Spain grant Vasconia independence?

I chose the option of no.

Vasconia is Latin for Basque Land. It was named after the Vascons. The modern inhabitants of Vasconia are partly descended from the Vascons. The word "Basque" is a corruption of the word "Vascon."

Vasconia would be too small of a country. The Vascon independence movement is just ridiculous.

I don't know yet why there are people in Vasconia who want it to be independent.

JAR, a nice thread on a topic that most of us have little interest in. Most of the violence in the Basque part of Spain seems to have gone away, so stories about Basques have faded to almost zero. I think I read or have heard that the Basques are doing particularly well financially these days and so seem particularly unlikely to be pushing this issue right now.

I met a Basque person on an airplane flight once. Her cut at it was that she'd like independence for Basques but she had absolutely no interest or support for violence to obtain it.

As to my opinion, I didn't vote in your poll and don't know nearly enough about the situation to have a remotely informed opinion. I had no idea that the Basque part of Spain was called Vasconia by the way.

As the threat of wars of conquest fades in Europe, a lot of the old pressure for countries to stay together to fend off outside attacks will fade away also. It will be interesting to see how this plays out in terms of the number of new countries and how successful they are.

There does seem to be a very big rise in seperatist/nationalism in europe these days. i really dont know anything about Basques though............ I dont know their history or why they resent being part of Spain.

I think self-determination is very important so I might tend to be sympathetic to the basques but then Im ignorant of the fact. Maybe they're just a basquet case?

The question is not "Should Spain grant the Basque Country independence?" but "Do a majority of the Basques want independence from Spain?"

If yes, then the country should be independent. If no, then it shouldn't.

Same for Catalonia, Scotland, Wales, Corsica, and essentially everywhere there's a separatist movement. Hell, the same for Cornwall or Chipping Sodsbury if you like.

I wasn't able to vote in the poll, as there is no "Yes, if the Basques want it" option. I don't know the feeling of the majority of the Basques on this issue.

What, as opposed to Luxembourg and Lichtenstein (smaller than the Basque Country) or Belgium and the Netherlands (not much bigger than it)? Small countries don't automatically do badly for themselves.
