Would this be a good idea, a popular one or perhaps a bad, unpopular one? How would Trump go about it?

He doesn't seem to know much about economics - so much for his Business School training - if he thinks 25% tariffs are going to coerce a desperate economically wrecked Canada to come begging on their knees to join the US.

Also, 'cherished' sounds a tad sarcastic.

President Donald Trump has again threatened Canada in their emerging trade war, repeating that the neighbouring country should become "our cherished 51st state".

The US leader said this weekend that he is imposing 25% tariffs on imports from Canada and Mexico.

I'm content to let the Canadians tick their own choice as it would seem a particularly inappropriate time for foreigners to try to tell them what they should do. I'm not in any particular doubt which one they would tick.

One question - what is the actual process for a new state being added to the USA? Or rather what was it meant to be pre-Trump?

You'd think a Trumpian America would most appeal to the nationalist elements in Canada ... which also seems like the kind of demographic that would absolutely balk at the idea becoming a US state (not that other demographics wouldn't balk, but I don't even see the far right as being on board).

I miss the 'Canada should join the EU' option :)
At least Dump and putin's shenanigans have been good for EU and NATO expansion. Norwegians have been staunch opponents of EU membership since forever, but are now reluctantly starting to having a debate (even though the majority would still vote against).

As for the poll, don't understand why the question is even asked. Obviously the answer is no. You might as well ask if it'd be good or bad if Dump and Elonia lost their bearings while furiously making out in a 20th floor hotel room and toppled out of the window.

While I still breathe it's not going to happen. I would quite literally die fighting before calling myself an American.

It's not that bad. It's not great, but it has been worse in the past.

If ◊◊◊◊ gets too bad I'm running to Canada though. I'm only about 80 miles from the border and I have technical skills. Is there any honorary Canadian citizenship I can apply for?

I would enjoy Australia but alas, I am stuck in the United States no matter what. I have a felony on my record from about 25 years ago and no countries let in people like us! That would be awesome though, without the felony I'd probably qualify since I've been doing networking for 10+ years and have been in IT for closer to 20.
