I can't believe anyone still goes to this college. Virginia Tech is still battling legal issues from the massacre in 2007. I wonder if this will effect their case. I hope they get this guy before he kills anyone else.

Seems to be unrelated -- a cop directing traffic was shot and killed, and then the gunman ran in the direction of VT, shooting and killing another person along the way.

Tragic either way that the institution that fell victim to such a gruesome massacre so recently should have to live through this, too.

Indeed. What little bright side there is to this seems to be the alerts that they are putting out, informing anyone on the campus to find a safe and secure location and stay put until the all clear is given.

Likely an intended "suicide by cop" that didn't go as planned....

Maybe. I'm also wondering if he had something against that particular cop? Or just a nut who decided to shoot someone that day, and that someone happened to be a police officer.

One wonders if he freaked out and killed the cop because of fear he would find something in his car, or was he wanted, or maybe he went there to kill someone else? We may never know.

The BBC is reporting that the shooter wasn't in the car, so it may well have had nothing to do with the traffic stop at all.

We had one locally here just this last Spring. A sergeant on one of the adjacent departments had just completed a call and was sitting in his car when an individual simply walked up and shot him dead.
Turned out the guy was a lunatic with Manson-like ideas of precipitating a "race war"....

UCity.

Off topic, but are campus police, for lack of a better term, "real" police? Meaning, do you have full powers of arrest, investigation, etc?

Not meant to be unsulting, just curious.

It depends. If they are a campus Police department/office then they are full fledged cops. If they are campus security they are security guards. You pretty much have to go by their actual uniforms and such rather than what the locals call them.

I'm sorry, but am I the only one that, when looking at Scrut's avatar, keep mentally adding the text:

"MISSING
$50,000 reward for information leading to the whereabouts of this woman"

above that picture?

She's not missing. We know where she is and which two people put her there. :)

So I'm guessing he thought he was being pulled over because of the SUV theft and didn't want to go to prison?

No the SUV was found abandoned elsewhere. He walked up and interrupted a completely unrelated traffic stop.
