One officer, one civilian dead. Several more officers and civilians injured. Suspect in custody.

So, shall we just kick off the gun debate now or wait for a few more posts to build up?

Somebody shot somebody, officers responded, shots were exchanged, and and they killed the assailant- we think. Not terrorosm that we here of.

And the point of posting that on an international website is?

Looks like they were serving an eviction notice and it went very wrong. Reports suggesting the suspect is DOA too.

CNN for whatever reason decided to include the party affiliation of the deceased officer, for reasons that defy logic.

I noticed that, too. I gather he was running for office of some sort. They refer to his "campaign page" on Facebook.

Depends do you want to beat the "Jesus didn't save them" gang or " I wonder when the conspiracy will start" crowd.

Serving eviction notices is generally hazardous, anyway...

Homicide rates are at all time lows...

Yeah. That's like saying Venus is cooler than Mercury.

As I've said many times, Australia had a series on mass murders by firearms, mainly by semi-automatics, in the five years culminating with Port Arthur. There were bans on semi-automatics since then, and it's bloody hard to get a handgun or assault rifle of any sort. There hasn't been any mass firearm murders since then. You guys have made your choice. Firearm murders are the consequence of your "right to bear arms" mindset. Just be honest and admit that killings like this are consequences.

I actually looked at the stats. There was no sharp downward tend in homicides after 1996. In fact, they spiked a few years later in 1999. They since went down a little but there is no way you can know if it was because your country made a knee jerk reaction to ban semi auto guns.

In the same time period in the US, homicide rates are down significantly. Amount of national gun control laws that have passed since: Zero.

I hate to participate in what is no doubt heading into anti-gun territory, but the violent crime rate in GB is 5 times that of the U.S. Lack of guns does not equal peace. More guns DOES equal less violent crime. In Oz, less semi autos did not equal less murders.

Oh well.

Not listing several types of cimes as violent crime equals less violent crime.

Comparing two countries that classify what counts as violent crime in very different ways may lead to conclusions that are unwarranted.

Maybe so. I've even heard that in England, use of the word "bloody" is considered a violent crime. :)
