Shermer on Larry King on UFOs NOW!!!

And they are now using the idea that tv movies about Betty and Barney (not the Flintstones - though IMHO equally fictional) imply it's real!!

And that newspaper reports of claims is proof also!!

I just tuned in thanks for the heads-up.

Man Larry King is sinking even lower than I thought he possibly could by bringing in Freidman.
I liked the assertion that since a newspaper said it, it had to be true.

Buzz loves the limelight. It must be a bummer to be the fella you forget, I'd imagine I'd build up my story too.

So Aldrin, for all his bluster, doesnt think there is anything that happened that would have been be covered up regarding UFOs.

Larry treated the madness with the contempt it deserved.

Meanwhile, we have rockets on the march to Mars looking for signs of life.

Good material Q-G. Thanks!

Looking forward to seeing what the guru of ufology, Stanton Friedman, has to say. It appears that he's not a good researcher, according to the Shermer's link.

Good stuff.

It was a bit annoying how they couldn't have a respectful debate, waiting for each person to finish what they were saying in turn before stating their point of view. Although I suppose they all wanted to get their point across, as time was short.

Shermer was made out to be the bad guy on the show, but he has a very good point, something that Stanton Friedman really doesn't grasp (despite him claiming to be a physicist!) All us sceptics want is some hard evidence other than a few grainy pictures or video clips and a few anecdotal tales.

I would agree though that Fox and Friedman do have a point too - there are a LOT of claims from military personnel, airline pilots, etc...

Sure, as Shermer says, they are no better witnesses really (psychologically speaking), but there are enough stories out there to make the case interesting and worthy of investigation.

There are certainly UFOs up there. That's not in question. There are things seen by many people that defy explanation. It doesn't mean they are aliens, of course.

As a side point, the Phoenix lights shown in that clip (and in a documentary I saw a few years ago which explained them away as aircraft flares) are very similar to the lights seen over Wrexham (my home town) and Stratford-upon-Avon 10 days ago. The Stratford video clip is interesting because of the way the lights move.

ETA: Just read the eSkeptic page too. Some of those letters are amusing. Some people can be real jelly-brains! I particularly like the one from the "anonymous" guy who "isn't trying to be rude or ill-mannered" and isn't going to "call him names" but still manages to do so... But they just don't seem to get it. Shermer isn't saying (as far as I know) that these things don't exist. He's saying that there's no hard evidence for them and until there is, there is no reason to act as if they DO exist.

There's already a thread about the Stratford lights here. Seems they were just paper lanterns released from a wedding party nearby.

I just caught the tape here in Korea. It didn't seem like Shermer got a lot of talking time compared to the other "UFOlogists," but he made his point clearly. Aldrin was long-winded, but in the end he seemed to come down strongly on the side of Shermer. The one UFO guy in the tweed (or tweed-looking) jacket seemed a bit taken aback by Aldrin's skepticism. It sounded like he had pegged Aldrin as a UFO-believer because of a story in which Aldrin allegedly encountered a UFO -- something he shot down pretty nicely on the show (he witnessed the planet Venus).

To be fair to Aldrin, he was long winded, but he was trying to explain exactly what happened so that there would be no misunderstanding. The problem was that Larry King kept interrupting him to tell him to get to the point - understandable because he's got his own schedule to keep to as well, but on such a complicated subject, the reason why there are so many believers out there is because people don't take the time to study the topic in enough depth. They don't analyse things as much as they should do. They are rushed to give explanations which then become misconstrued, exactly as Aldrin's comments have done in the past. He was trying to rectify that by giving a full explanation, and was not allowed the time to do so.

It was a joy watching Aldrin nailing the coffin of the (in)famous Apollo 11 UFO sighting, once and for all (really?). This was for long a pet case of UFO enthusiasts.

For all who may not know, The Science Channel issued a video a time ago with an interview of Aldrin purportedly reporting a UFO of unknown origin on their way to the moon Here's this video. As expected, the video caused a great fuss on the UFO world. I had a long and heated debate about it on a UFO forum, the video was rubbed on my face for some time. I admit that the way it is presented is thought provoking on the possibility of UFOs being alien ships.

But the thing is that the video was conveniently edited to convey the impression that what the astronauts saw was a genuine UFO. Essential parts of the interview that reveal the mundane origin of the sighting were edited out, according to this article by NASA astronomer David Morrison. Other comments also added fuel to a big mysterious UFO story.

But guess what?..., my opponent did not believe Morrison.

So it's a good thing that Aldrin finally spoke out loud about the sighting. I made a video, here.

Oh yes, I can foresee how UFO advocates will react to this: Aldrin is under strict orders of the goverment agencies to not reveal the true facts, that's why he changed the account and made up this panel story .... blah, blah.
