Worth just over $21 billion and now in the cross hairs of the Justice Department and the Securities and Exchange Commission, Adelson has made history: He is the first person to spend $70 million to sway a presidential election, and he plans to spend more — perhaps as much as $100 million — by Election Day. An estimated $20 million to $30 million of the giving went to groups that do not disclose their donors and had not been reported before.

<...>

Blunt and chatty during a two-hour interview in his owner’s suite at The Venetian resort on the Las Vegas strip, Adelson said he will continue to ante up — “whatever it takes” to defeat President Barack Obama, as he repeatedly put it. “I don’t believe one person should influence an election,” he said as he dined on salmon and mixed vegetables in his conference room, with a napkin tucked over his lavender tie. “So, I suppose you’ll ask me, ‘How come I’m doing it?’ Because other single people influence elections.”

<...>

Adelson has already given about three times as much as the previous record-holder, hedge fund manager George Soros, who dropped $24 million to try to defeat President George W. Bush in 2004. And Adelson has already given about one-third of the amount that Sen. John McCain (R-Ariz.) spent on his entire campaign in 2008.

At least he openly admits he is trying to buy this election. Not that he will likely miss it, but I hope he loses every last penny he's put into trying to do so.

As a shady casino mogul, he makes a great poster boy for the idea of getting money out of politics. There are some very rich people on the left too. Soros is one. He's not quite in the same league as Adelson though. It seems like Buffet and Bill Gates are more sympathetic to Democrats, but I don't see them throwing their money at the political process.

His casinos are the worst to work for in Las Vegas. A friend of mine knows him personally and he's a real prick. I hate him.

That is a lot of money. After contributing a certain amount, you would think it would be cheaper to just pay the taxes you are spending money trying to get reversed.

That made me laugh.

He already dumped millions into Gingrich...Somehow I wouldn't want this chump managing my finances. It makes sense that he got his money in an industry where there house always wins.

With 100 million bucks you could live very nicely anywhere, if you disliked a president that much.

Fortunately, we have an iron-clad assurance that, in the event Mitt Romney wins and is forced to choose between a path that is good for Sheldon Adelson and a path that is good for the Country at large, that Romney will choose the path that is good for the Country at large. Mitt will not feel indebted to Sheldon in any way, no sir; and Mitt will not let the tens of millions of dollars spent by this single person on Mitt's behalf influence his judgment in any way.

Why do you hate free speech?

He's under investigation by the feds right now. This job creator is building casinos off shore and bribing people to push the deals through.

Definitely needs a bigger tax break.

So money doesn't really have any influence over people's votes? We better inform every politician out there that their ads are useless.

Of course it has influence. All advertising does. But the OP claimed he was "buying" the election. That is not true. He is trying to influence it, just like you do when you tell your friends to vote for <whoever>.
