From the article:
An Australian court has issued a landmark ruling to allow a 13-year-old child to begin sex-change procedures.
"Alex", is biologically a girl, but wishes to be considered and referred to as a male.

Brought up as a boy by his father, he opts to wear nappies to school rather than use female toilets.

It is the first time an Australian child has been given legal approval to begin hormone treatment based solely on a psychiatric assessment.

The decision has been both applauded and condemned by commentators.
....
In approving the application, the court stipulated that Alex's treatment be phased so that it does not become irreversible until he reaches 16.

I don't know how to judge this one; on one hand it's a person's right to do whatever with their bodies on the other the person in question is a 13 year old child and although it doesn't become irreversible till 16 it still doesn't seem right.

According to some of my gay friends, you're very much aware of your sexuality by 8 or 9 years old. I know this is anecdotal evidence.

When I was that age (actually more like 10 or 11), if a girl looked my way more than once, it gave me a woody.

Charlie (perhaps "Snap-on-Tools" can donate to the operation) Monoxide

Okay, why was s/he raised as a boy? Is there something wrong with him/her that allows her/him to piss him/herself rather than use the wrong restroom?

Why is the doctor going to perform this surgery? Seriously, I think doctors need to police their own sort of the way that the amercan bar association used to require high ethical standards for american lawyers.

This issue is too dumb for me to care about. Let the kid be a bitch, I don't give a fcuk.
