I read about a new book "Sell your house with Feng Shui" here:
http://www.sacbee.com/103/story/341762.html

What troubled me was that the usually skeptically-minded Sac Bee put this in the Business section; they usually put this crap in "Scene".

Debunking Feng Shui is especially difficult because often practical and tested principles of architecture and interior design are mixed in with the bull. For example:

When trying to sell your home, don't put something blocking the doorway. Well, duh. Clean up any clutter. Place plants around the house. Who can challenge this infallible ancient oriental wisdom?

Well, it could be set to become big business. Apparently one multinational communications company is developing a “feng shui phone” that’s “able to evaluate environment according to Feng Shui principles” -

To be able to do Feng Shui evaluation this cellphone will have:

Three-dimensional Hall-effect sensor for measuring the strength of electromagnetic fields and to form a compass to determine the geographic direction in which the main wall of the house faces.

Digital camera to determine color saturation, order and balance of the surroundings.

GPS receiver to determine geographic location of the phone.

The coordinates are then sent to the GIS databse through wireless network to to get the information about the surroundings of the location, e.g. the distance from the undesirable sites such as major airports, landfills, and factories.

Cellphone microphone is used to measure noise level of the location.

AM/FM radio to measure the AM and FM transmission strength and the distance form nearest AM/FM towers.

The table with the chi values of each parameter is stored in phones memory and is used for calculation of chi values of different parameters.

I could understand "new books target desperate housing market", being in the business section, but this article was clearly about how to cope with the market.

I read through that patent application, and couldn't find any reference to any of the claims in the article.

Have you expressed your concerns to Jim Wasserman, the staff writer responsible for the article? His contact details are given at the foot of the article. It might be helpful to include this with any correspondence:

Wow, such an extensive use of science in order to determine Pseudo-Science BS.

Neither could I. It looks like they've put up the wrong link. However, you can find the same concept here...

..as originally mentioned by Randi last year:

Thanks! That looks like the correct link. Looks like they're gonna corner the feng shui phone market...

I'm going to pretend I have one next time I go to a restaurant. I'll point my phone at the kitchen and say "Sorry, I can't eat here, your kitchen has bad f'ui"

Does that mean I can't quadruple the price because of special Feng Shui properties? My slick-haired buddy over there is a certified geomancer, and if you're interested, he has some magic land to sell you...
