Hi, I'm new here, but signed up in hopes that a Seattle area skeptic might be better qualified than I am to respond with eloquent rationality to this "challenge":

"A.G.H.O.S.T. is looking for three individuals who might call themselves a real skeptic when it comes to believing in Ghosts or Spirits.

We Challenge this person to stay at a haunted place by themself for the weekend monitored only by the A.G.H.O.S.T. team. We want to see if we might be able to show these individuals that there might be something to this thing we call "ghost hunting". Each person will go on a separate trip alone. We will supply them with tools of a ghost hunter and train them on how to use them. They say ghosts tend to show themself to the non-believer! Well here's our chance to find out if thats true. Are you willing ?
We are."

You can see the full details here: http://axgxhxoxsxt.tripod.com/amateurghosthuntersofseattletacoma/id39.html

It sounds like a silly movie, doesn't it? Only there's no fabulous inheritance to be earned via the will of a deceased relative, for having stayed the weekend in the house. But perhaps one could write an interesting and amusing report afterwards, for the JREF.

Now, nobody in his/her right mind would accept such a challenge. Alone while a group of believers "monitor"? They could make all kinds of tricks.

All parts of protocol to be established in advance, by mutual agreement, then we can talk.

(I'm on the other side of the planet, so I can't participate, even if I would)

I agree, these people have an agenda. No way would I do that, though it would be fun to stay in a "haunted" house and be able to explore and investigate all the little noises and oddities that freak people out.

I would do it, except it sounds like it could be boring. Does the house have TV? Internet?
I'm not concerned about ghosts, but I'm terribly afraid of being bored.

If I were them, this would be a house rigged to display some freaky stuff. The expectation would be that a "skeptic" would deny hearing the moans & groans, deny seeing the glowing figures, deny feeling the subsonic vibrations...and then the group would proudly show that skeptics could not be trusted as witnesses, because they denied the existence of these things which the group had set up!

So...if anyone volunteers, bring along your own crew of observers to watch the observers.

Yes, although tempted to a certain degree to take the "challenge" myself, the concerns others have mentioned about the whole thing being rigged are part of what stops me. I don't know enough about how things can be faked to make a coherent argument that there is trickery going on (if indeed trickery were to go on), and wouldn't want to be left in the position of saying, "Well, yes, I saw a woman in white float across the room, but I just KNOW it was a trick." I also would want to have more in my arsenal of knowledge to be able to rationally counter their interpretations of anything that happened (various noises, etc.).

I poked around that A.G.H.O.S.T. site a bit, and at least they are honest enough to post the "results" of some of their haunted places investigations as being: nothing.

Could anyone point me to a few good sites or articles that make a skeptical examination of supposed ghost voice recordings?

I would love to accept a challenge like this. Unfortunately I'm not in the area. I would especially love it if they rigged the house. What better way to show that the believers are willing to resort to fraud? What an opportunity, you can catch them in the act!!!

Been there, Done that

I spent numerous nights in a so called haunted house, a friends house, in fact, and didn't see or hear anything. Of course I wasn't specifically looking for spirits, I was just staying the night.

Ditto, it'd be great to take part.

As for trickery, how about this: the site is randomly chosen by a mutually-trusted third party from a list of locations previously determined by the ghost group as suitable, and then revealed only to the participants - the skeptic, one member of the ghosthunters and one of the third party - on the eve of the event. No contact is allowed between the ghost group representative and the other members untli the investigation is complete. Thoughts?

On the subject of ghost voice recordings, I think you'll find the majority of them are indistinguishable from mic noise and invariably accompanied by a prompt, "Hey guys, I've just recorded this and it sounds to me like the spirit is saying "Need fresh brains". What do you think?"

I've been looking for skeptics to help me investigate the Stoll church in Kansas on Halloween. Fairly famous hounted house. Some claim that the Devil appears there on Halloween to mourn the death of a witch. It would be pretty fun. Since the church is kinda a hallow husk it would be more of a camp out. I even heard it might have been torn down by now. But the grave yard I believe is still there. The only problem I can see is the people who live in the area. I've heard that some of them have gotten sick of trespassers disgracing that "holy ground" and will take shots at people in the area.

here is a site with pictures of the church. spooky isn't it:D

Must have been some pretty special witch to get the big guy himself to come pay a visit.

Perhaps she polished his horns?

I believe the myth was that the witch was carrying Satan's child. The townfolk found out about this and hung the witch by the church. They tree they hung her from fell over and where it once stood was left a gaping hole straight to hell. Fun story huh?:D Beats the hell out of the common "husband went nuts and killed his family" haunted houses.

For those interested.
There is supposed to be a large fallen tree on the property. Though it may have been taken away by now. As far as I know, no one has seen the hole. There was also something about being able to throw bottles at the wall of the church and they wouldn't break. Also a stairway that goes down from the inside of the church a long way. If you live in Kansas it's not to hard to find stories about the place. It's also supposed to be in the dead center of five other "satanic" churches spaced out accross america in the shape of a pentagram.

Ghost Story

There was a woman driving along in a car one day , up a deserted road when a woman suddenly stopped her .
She asked her to give her a lift to a house , the woman agreed . When she stopped & let the woman off , she noticed the house was very gloomy & old looking & looked as if it had been abandoned . She also noticed the woman she picked up was wearing old fashioned clothes & wasn't very talkative , answering any questions she was asked with a simple yes or no .
It was only shortly afterwards that she found out from her landlord that the house was abandoned due to a series of sinister events that took place there in the 1950's . In doing so she also discovered who the woman was .

A young couple lived in the house . The woman was pregnant & went into labour but had some nasty complications , so her Husband phoned for a midwife to come out . The midwife crashed her car & on the way to the house & had died & as a result the mother & child died in labour . The Husband topped himself a fortnight later , unable to cope with the loss .
The woman was horrified to learn that her passenger had been none other than the midwife , still trying to get to the house to deliver the child , unaware she had been dead about 50 years & no one lived in the house .

This is a picture of the Stull church. Creepy ain't it. imagine it at night. Though I guess they tore the actual church down. Still one creepy cemetary.

I guess this is the tree, doesn't seem to fit with what I heard. Doesn't look much like it fell down. Though I guess it's been chopped down since then. It's kinda a shame. Atleast when it was haunted people enjoyed going to the church.

I researched Stull on the Internet a bit--it seems, as with other similar locations, there are many legends surrounding the place. I get the impression though that "visitors" are not welcomed with opened arms--- where is Stull located in Kansas?
