Ex-Champ Fischer Detained In Tokyo

TOKYO - After decades of evading the public eye and U.S. justice officials, former world champion Bobby Fischer — possibly the best and certainly the most eccentric chess player ever — has been taken into custody by Japanese immigration after allegedly trying to leave the country with an invalid passport.

Fischer, 61, was detained at Narita Airport outside Tokyo while trying to board a Japan Airlines flight for the Philippines on Tuesday, according to friends and airport officials. The U.S. Embassy confirmed Fischer was detained.

It was not immediately clear if Fischer would be extradited to the United States, where he is wanted for playing a 1992 chess match in the former Yugoslavia in violation of international sanctions. Japan and the United States have an extradition treaty.

...

He forfeited the title in 1975, refusing to play when conditions that he demanded proved unacceptable to the International Chess Federation. He resurfaced for a dramatic rematch against Spassky in Yugoslavia in 1992, beating him 10-5 to win $3.35 million.

After that, the fiercely private Fischer disappeared, living in secret outside the United States.

...

While incognito, Fischer intermittently gave interviews with a radio station in the Philippines, often digressing into anti-Jewish rants and accusing American officials of hounding him.

In the radio interviews, he praised the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks, saying America should be "wiped out," and described Jews as "thieving, lying bastards." His mother was Jewish.

...

A colorful character, this guy. Perhaps he can teach a bunch of inmates to play chess and they'll make a movie about it or something. :D :D :D

Nah, probably just fine him ten thou or so. I'm sure he could afford it...if he hasn't spent all his money already...

Too bad for the chess world that he went mental. Many consider him the best ever.

Actually, it's not that he "played chess un Yugoslavia", it's that he did it when it was under the rule of Milosevic in direct violation of a presidential order. Also, he is wanted by the IRS for not paying taxes for the last 30 years or so and openly bragged about it to many interviewers.

In reality, it's unlikely the DOJ is particularly interested in "getting" Fischer. If he had contacted them, they probably would have offered a "deal" of some sort instead of throwing the book at him. But Fischer just HAS to spit on a copy of the presidential order at the beginning of the match and rant about the jewish world cosnpiracy, and then go on the radio in Manila celebrating the 9/11 attacks and calling for the US's destruction. Neither of these is a crime per se, of course, but he isn't exactly making it easy for the DOJ to offer him a deal without losing face. He's been spoiling for a fight against the US for years, and it appears he might actually get it.

Then again, perhaps they will offer him a deal, and portray it (accurately, I suppose) as an act of charity towards a madman. In any case, even if he is put on trial, it doesn't take a genius of a lawyer to make Fischer ineligible to stand trial for reasons of insanity.

A real pity. I remember watching he and Spassky on channel 13 in NY with that guy who was the "MC". "Oh my god, look at that move unbelieveable!!!". Funny stuff but oddly mesmerizing.

Went mental? I can't remember a time when he wasn't mental.

The guy was a hell of a player, and pretty good at explaining tactics. (I still have some of his old chess columns from "Boy's Life" magazine.) But even the stories written about him in 1972--FAVORABLE stories--could not avoid mentioning his "eccentricities." Word has it that Bob Hope was frustrated beyond belief when he put together a show that featured Mark Spitz and Bobby Fischer as guests in a couple of sketches. (Spitz played a dentist, and in a separate sketch, Fischer played a tardy, eccentric chess player who showed up at a match just as Bob Hope was about to tip over his king and claim victory by default.)

I must agree with Brown here - he was always nuts. Some people claim that some instances of his eccentric behavior - for example, refusing to play unless the colors of the squares on the board were changed - were actually "mental intimidation tactics" designed to somehow "confuse" his opponent - but I call bull. He was just looney. If they were just tactics, he would've acqiesced when FIDE finally decided not to continue catering to his every whim; instead, he got pissed and refused to ever play another tournament. That'll teach them!

I just read about this story here

The reclusive Mr Fischer was apparently travelling without a valid passport and did praise the 11 September attacks on the US - but the reason for the extradition order was his 1992 trip to Yugoslavia for a rematch against his great rival Boris Spassky. The country was under international sanctions at the time and the US announced it wanted to prosecute him - prompting Mr Fischer to disappear for more than a decade.

No statute of limitations for this?

Where does the Constitution give the President the power to issue orders to American citizens? Or does Fischer hold some sort of military rank I'm unaware of?

It's in there. Keep looking. Or maybe your "constitutional expert" (notice the quote marks) Bednarik can show it to you.

Do you not have ANYTHING constructive to bring to the table? Is all you have smart-aleck remarks and ad hominem attacks?

Learn the definition of "ad hominem". You have access to one of the leading "constitutional experts" (again notice the quotes) of our time. I merely suggested you ask him for help.

Use of the quotes constitutes an ad hominem. Don't insult the intelligence of everyone here by pretending otherwise.

No, it means that he is a self described "constitutional expert". No body else has given him that moniker. Except perhaps other loonies, and he don't care about them!
