Scientology definitely a cult according to the daily mail

It's hard to imagine a source I would take less seriously than the Daily Mail reporting on Rupert Murdoch's personal opinions. However, if that's the way he's chosen to jump, I can think of a couple more newspapers that should be following suit as fast as they can read the inter-office memo...

Rupert Murdoch is Tweeting his personal thoughts about celebrities? It's got to be fake, surely?

I wasn't really talking about the article itself which may or may not be cobblers.
But from the article

"His warning comes as Ms Holmes claimed that her every move has been tracked by a team of mystery men - who she believes have been sent to spy on her by the cult"

"including actors such as Cruise and John Travolta, are involved with the cult."

"If members of the church are tracking Ms Holmes, it would not be the first time that Scientologists have turned on those who have left the cult."

I might be mistaken but I don't recall any UK newspapers referring to it as a cult in a matter of fact way before.

Of course it's a cult.

cult

2.
an instance of great veneration of a person, ideal, or thing, especially as manifested by a body of admirers: the physical fitness cult.
3.

5.
Sociology . a group having a sacred ideology and a set of rites centering around their sacred symbols.

I know the word cult today is a scary word with negative connotations that we don't use that often when talking about mainstream religion. But according to the definitions of the word, what religion isn't a cult?

I think that a good definition of a cult is this: If someone involved in a certain religion claims they have been tracked by a team of mystery men, and your reaction is not, "Geez, what a paranoid wingnut", but rather, "Yeah, that sounds about right"....you've got yourself a cult there.

No doubt the Daily Mail is terrified that if the daughter is shipped off to Sea Org, they'll be unable to publish any more of their "what Suri did/wore today" stories.

Mine.

The UK media has a pretty sound record going right back to Dianetics of calling a spade a spade.
