I am not sure what to make of this. The details are sparse, and I beleive it is unclear whether this woman was executed for sorcery, or for swindling people. It does not even say how she was executed. I hope it was not by stoning.

It staggers me to think of people being charged and put to death for being a witch in this day and age, though I know it happens.

I am not sure which reason would be worse for puting her to death.

Thoughts?

Not surprising for a country that is morally stuck in the religious dark ages.

Maybe a little surprising, even if that is the case.

I see this as a failure of critical thinking, rather than morals and religion.

If you are going to kill someone for being an actual sorcerer, you should have some objective evidence that they are capable of and have used actual sorcery. Exactly the same as if it were any other crime. I am pretty sure they did not have that.

Even a fundamentalist who believes in sorcery, in a country that has sorcery laws on the books should be able to adhere to that standard.

What happens if we turn it around? Let's say sorcery was real, and you had rock solid evidence that someone had murdered another person using sorcery. Should they be charged with sorcery, or murder?

Same difference.

Char is an American "medium" that has achieved quite some fame here in the Netherlands.

Oh. Well, maybe we should all ship our sorcerers to SA for disposal.

Then again, maybe not.

Sorcerers are people too. lets just fine the living XXXX out of them. :)

You are of course implying that people who bring charges of sorcery against someone can deduce (our standards of) objective evidence.

Ship the sorcerers to Saudi Arabia and ship the Mullahs to the moon.

Are you sure about that? Have you ever eaten with one?*

*Sorry, couldn't resist the Producers paraphrase.

More evidence that Saudi Arabia is a barbaric feceshole.

(bolding mine)

I would say it more like: “should be able to.” If someone cannot discern the nature & importance of objective evidence, they have no business working in a legal system.

Hey man, what is up with your avatar!? It’s horrifying! :D

That goes without saying though.

It's me every time I see a post in the occupy thread.

Executed for fraud by the looks of it. Barbaric and disgusting to say the least. But then so is any country who executes their citizens.
