A very well-made point. There should be no limits to skeptical inquiry.

I challenge anyone to find anything objectionable in the quote.

Challenge me to find something objectionable in Sam Harris!

I think that there clearly is such a thing as Islamaphobia, it's just that various things get the label applied to them incorrectly.

There you are, then. Nobody is denying you the right to sceptical inquiry into Islam.

Mrs. qg (bless her heart) will immediately and unfailingly distrust and dislike anyone who presents to her as Muslim or Arab (because they are probably Muslim). On TV or in public. There is no reasoning with or dissuading her.

She is not the only person I know who suffers from this sort of unassailable knee-jerk reaction.

Maybe that isn't Islamophobia, but if it's not I'd like to know what else to call it. Sure, it's bigotry, but it is a very targeted and specific bigotry, and unreasoning fear is definitely an element. Isn't that what defines a "phobia"?

Maybe it is "anti-Muslim bigotry" or "anti-Arab bigotry".

What does your personal anecdote have to do with the OP? Are you implying that all who criticize Islam have some sort of unassailable knee-jerk reaction?

How about if we call those who have an unassailable knee-jerk reaction to defend Islam as Isalmophiles.

Ignoring the fact that diverse elements of that religion call for and practice violence in the name of that religion and attempting to divert any discussion of that fact is dishonest.

Ignoring the fact that diverse elements of that religion don't call for and practice violence in the name of that religion and attempting to divert any discussion of that fact, as Harris does, is dishonest and bigoted.

His "personal anecdote" is a refutation of the OP's claim that there is no such thing as Islamophobia.

Are you implying that all who criticize Islam have some sort of unassailable knee-jerk reaction?

There was no such thing implied at all, so why the knee-jerk reaction?

How about if we call those who have an unassailable knee-jerk reaction to defend Islam as Isalmophiles.

And how about those who have an unassailable knee-jerk reaction to misread and misinterpret other people's posts?;)

Do you deny the fact that some Muslims commit violence in the name of Islam?

For Islamophobia, how about this? There's lots of this kind of stuff on the net.
Our Constitution allows for freedom of religion. Along with that come all the modern perks including tax exemption and other special privileges. If it can be proven that islam does NOT qualify as a religion according to our laws, then islam will lose its religious designation, it’s very wanted but misguided protection under the guise of our First Amendment along with its tax exempt status, and thus its foothold in America. With that said, what I will try to do here is present a feasible argument that the special rights and privileges afforded islam were given in error and hopefully will be reversed, thus helping to save our Judeo-Christian nation from the islamization being forced on us by the Obama administration.

Are his opinions yours as well, Humes? That there's something inherent in Islam that makes it a special threat to civil society? That's quite a claim.

And, as usual, you want us to discuss this without ever comparing it to any other religions?

For more Islamophobia how about this? http://www.faithfreedom.org/oped/VernonRichards50806.htm
But as has been pointed out by Robert Spencer, Nuking Mecca could also be seen by Islamists as a weak action and could serve to unify Muslims and increase Jihad. But this is only true if not done properly and the city is left salvageable within a few years ...
That's probably enough to give you a flavour of the work. Anyway, I think it indicates that Islamophobia is no myth.

Anybody who doesn't want to torture non-Muslims to death isn't living by what Muhammad taught.
