Rudy Giuliani's platform for '08

I went to Rudy's* campaign site and I see a lot about what he has done in the past on the local level, but nothing about what his positions are on national level issues. I'm not seeing anything on wikipedia either.

Anyone give me a hand here?

I hope he doesn't get mired down in platforming. He was always a pragmatic and numbers oriented guy. The worst thing he could do is take stances on national issues that the president really has no business getting personally involved in. I think abortion is really going to hurt the GOP in 08 if they keep having their candidates adopt platform positions on it for instance.

If you want to know what Rudy is all about, I think you should read his farewell address transcript.

After you get past the "big" talk at the beginning, it becomes an autobiographical account of city management that could really serve as a "City Management for Dummies" guide. I think his perserverance, pragmatism, and wisdom really shine through.

Mike Bloomberg when probed about not being conservative enough once said "there isn't a republican or democrat way to pick up trash". Rudy is partially from that same school of thought and I hope he stays free of ideology as much as possible.

In a way, Rudy is the anti-Obama.

So you're saying that Rudy should not state what he'll do if elected? I would vote for anyone on that basis why? I guess I'll have to take your word for it that he's the "anti-Obama," whatever that means.

I got up to the Bernie Kerik reference.

Painting Giuliani as the "anti-Obama" may end up working very well for Obama.

Would you believe that I had already read it? Sure it drops a few hints, but it's hardly a treasure trove of policy positions for a 2008 presidential candidate. Yes, it's early in the race, but Rudy won't long be able to withstand withholding positions, and will therefore annoy one or the other of the competing constituencies he's trying to address: GOP religious conservatives he'll need for the nomination and that large sliver of Dem/liberals he'll need to be elected ultimately.

I understand the need for flexibility, but he has to put something out there to help us decide whether or not to vote for him. How are we to know if he is the right man for the job?

All kidding aside, I really want to know what corp means by that. The usual non-sustantive knock on Obama is that he's just a pretty face, product of media hype, doesn't actually stand for anything, that kind of thing. But corplinx says that Giuliani is the "anti-Obama" in the very midst of praising Giuliani for not articulating his positions. Logically inconsistent, perhaps?
 
Guliani's platform for presidency appears to be:
I was mayor of New York when 9/11 happened, vote for me!
 
Re-read the section about ideology and how it had ruined NYC government. Then consider why he would be reluctant to adopt positions based on ideology instead of dealing with issues as they arise based on the evidence at hand and a pragmatic approach.

Edited to Add: Read the John McCain if you want an idea of why platforming can make you weak. Your stuck with the platform and are a slave to it.

I think Obama has positions, they are just typical liberal-democrat ones and he wants to keep the populism he is enjoying now by talking in big terms and not saying "tax the rich, more gun ownership restrictions, no drilling in Anwar, no war, no big war on terror."

Its too early to say who I would vote for. But right now my contrarian senses loathe obama's populism and have me looking hard at Rudy since anyone getting met with rhetoric like "hes just running on 911" must be something to be feared.

The thing is, I don't think Rudy can win. He's too realistic and pragmatic and frankly boring. He won't sound sincere wording his stances carefully to avoid offending the far right conservatives in his party.

As much as people malign Rudy, he's too qualified and right for the job to be president. I would hate for him to become another John McCain.
