Caught his little speech last night. I thought it was pretty good. It was very informationa and streesed how these cells were not coming from fetuses.

Are there that many Republicans that back the stem cell restrictions?? I woudl think that would only impress the far righties.

It seems to me that Bush is sort of alone on this.

It's just him and the entire theocratic wing of the Republican party. If you're a Republican and Nancy Reagan is against you (on a particular position), you have to at least stop and wonder ... that is if you're not insulated from reality by hubris and/or blind faith.

Rove is looking more and more off his game every day. W's defeat is going to make his daddy's look like a squeaker.

I never heard anyone else rail about it that's all. I have no doubt that Bush's position is principled but it is surely stupid.

Now Bush is stuck. He's Mr. Stick to His guns. If he were to back off the stem cell thing then that would be a *gasp*........FLIP FLOP!!!

If he believes it sincerely he should not change his opinion.

Well he could just blame it all on bad intelligence and wipe his hands clean of the whole matter.

I find the comedy of Bush blaming his missteps on "bad intelligence" too much to bare sometimes.

Edited to add: "bear"?

Mm. Personally, I think the world might be a better place if politicians did find themselves able to change their opinions.

There seems to be no place in the media where reasoned discussion of positions can occur. The sound byte system of media coverage pretty much excludes reason or discussion.
The sound byte winners are the politicians that can jab the hardest, yell the loudest, and present the smallest target to jabs and shouts.

I don't disagree but that was not the case I was referring to. Bush believes in Capitol punishment. I do not but he believes it and I know where he stands. Kerry does not believe in it except in the case of terrorists. I have no idea where he stands. Bush is against gay marriage and supports a constitutional amendment. Kerry is against it too but believes the states should decide. That is not a stand, it is ducking. I have no idea where he stands.

At least a position is something you can shoot at and discuss.

This line of thought was lifted in part from Safires Edit in the NYT today.

How is Kerry ducking the gay marriage issue. He says he doesnt believe in it. What more do you want. The states rights portion is a different issue.

You guys are supposedly skeptics, you didn't have any problem with him portraying miraculous cures based on scr as if they were real?

Why is government funding for stem cell research so important? I don't believe its government's job to fund scienctific research unless its of strategic interest to the republic. I know this is an unpopular view these days what with the constitution being used for toilet paper but its true.

I don't oppose governemt funded stem cell research in particular, just most government funded scientific research in general.

I think curing disease is a big public interest.

You cant leave everything up to market forces. If its just a profit motive then you'll make more money with Viagra type of products vs curing some realtivly uncommon disease.

Then theres the old "drug compaines dont want to cure cancer" line. Curing all these sick people would be bad business. Ever notice that Lens Crafters doesnt offer Lasik surgery.

But industry won't take the risk on funding the basic research that keeps America at the forefront of science and technology. Therefore it is in the long term strategic (economic) interest of the country to fund basic research through the government.

Did the government fund research of Intel's latest chips?

Theres a big market for Intels chip. Its worth the cost of the research.

Some diseases may not be common enough to bother with research to help a realtivly few people who suffer from the disease. Its not cost effective. Does that mean we dont bother to find a cure?
