From another thread

Rolfe: And this thread MUST supersede the "Wanna vote" one which is so OT it's out of sight and should have been moved to Flame Wars long ago.
Complaints like that are one of the things that cause threads to go off topic. Such meta-discussions are a natural consequence of message boards. Unless you expect to be able to post complaints like that and suspress any ensuing discussion of it.

Also, the linear format of threads on this forum is a direct contributor to threads going off topic. A hierarchy format greatly mitigates that problem, since most of the time it is trivially easy to ignore subthreads that wander off the topic.

A compromise solution would be to do what I have done here and create a stand-alone subthread to discuss your complaint without severely interrupting the original thread. The difficulty with this solution is the time, effort, and skill it takes to manually cross-link the two threads. An option in the forum software to do this automatically would go a long way towards encouraging people to create stand-alone subthreads to accomodate off-topic shifts in the conversation.

Getting back to your complaint, I agree that the other thread got way off topic. I disagree that it should have been moved to Flame Wars, since that would have severely hindered any serious attempt to resolve the issues that came up.

In hindsight, what is your proposed solution? Who should have posted differently in that thread to avert the thread drift? Do you blame Eos for posting the first actual flame? Or do you blame me for characterizing an earlier complaint as the pot calling the kettle black? Or do you blame the two people who first complained about censorship on the hpathy forum? At what point do you consider the thread to have gone "off topic"?

Threads go off topic all the time, usually degenerating into some form of personal battle between a few of the posters. Because different people have different prioritories and some people have points to score its quite natural for a thread to wander. If it does to a degree that i can no longer post on the subject being discussed i will stop posting, and if it becomes uninteresting i will stop reading it.

Besides i would probably characterise Rolfes comment as an observation rather than a complaint.

I suppose we could quibble about semantics.

complaint, n. [F. complainte.] 1. Expression of grief, regret, pain, censure, or resentment; lamentation; murmuring; accusation; fault-finding.

Prester John: Why not
Trading dictionary definitions hasn't resolved anything, apparently. :)

Getting back to the point of this thread, complaining (or observing) that threads go severly off topic is only the first step in solving the problem. The problem will only really be solved when a solution is found. (I can't believe I just said something that should be completely obvious to everyone.)

Complaints (or observations) of the kind made by Rolfe only identify the problem, they do not offer any real help regarding what to do about it. Obviously to avoid a thread from going off topic, someone needs to do something different - but what, specificially?

Simply saying that people shouldn't take threads off topic doesn't help solve the problem. What would help is identifying what, where , when, or how a thread has gone off topic.

Likewise, saying that an off topic thread should be moved to Flame Wars doesn't help solve the problem either. An unintended consequence of that "solution" would be that anytime someone wants to kill a thread, all they have to do is flame someone in it and the thread will get moved to Flame Wars where it will essentially die.

At least I tried to actually solve the problem. At least I tried an experiment that may (or not) lead to a solution, by posting a cross-linked stand-alone subthread in reply to Rolfe's off topic comments in that other thread. I actively tried to avoid taking that thread off topic, while still challenging his off-topic comments. Has this experiment been a failure?

I also tried to identify one of the causes of threads going off topic, namely Rolfe's off-topic comments in that other thread. If I had challenged his comments in that thread instead of here, the resulting thread drift would be readily identifiable as having originated with his comment.

Is anyone else interested in trying to solve the problem instead of just running their mouth about it?

I don't think I can remember ever being upset by a thread going off topic or onto a side topic. On the other hand, I can remember that many have been a source of either great amusement or great interest. True, some lead nowhere or to dead ends but, hey, life's can never be perfect.

(Sorry for the side-topic)

I don't think that it is a resolvable problem, unless you had more aggresive moderation, which would most likely not be good.

You just got to live with some things.
