Robert Krulwich - Outstanding Prose

I was just going to post the same thing myself! It's very good, and even though he is the more "spiritual" of the guys on Radio Lab, he defends the defense against nonsense very eloquently here.

I haven't heard it yet, but radiolab is an awesome podcast... just finished their "emergence" episode.

I heard it last night, one of the best for sure. His delivery and writing are just outstanding and inspirational. I was just hypnotized listening. I love podcasts.

They are all extremely well done, but another of my favorites was the one on "War of the Worlds". Wow! Just super. I really wish radio were even a tenth as good at programming and creativity. I find myself not willing to contribute any more to our local university PBS stations, since I almost never listen these days.

Off topic, but what happens unfortunately in public broadcasting is that people are kept on long after their usefulness has run out.

OK but you do knoiw that Radio Lab is a radio show right? A WNYC Public Radio International program?

Of course. I just don't see why our local outlets don't have much beyond "Click and Clack" for entertainment. I know some of these things cost a lot of money, and I guess interest is waning. I was trying to express my frustration at the fact that there is no local talent like at some bigger stations. I could be wrong, but it seems like in small markets, they just keep the same old tired folks that just do the same old tired talk shows and play the same old tired classical music...too much violin music and opera to suit me. Very little else, virtually no jazz, except for Marion McPartland special programming, etc.

It is difficult for me to believe that there are no university students with the talent to write and present real radio entertainment. The talk shows that do occur are just too, shall we say, "cautious" and middle of the road to really attract the younger crowd in my opinion. I think the target audience is probably above 45. I have friends who are in the radio business, one is syndicated, and they have worked for this PBS outlet just volunteering. They see this problem as well.

We also have a community all volunteer station. They do a fairly decent job but they are not setting the world on fire either.

OK,

but for the record I think the following Public Radio shows are all outstanding:

Car Talk
To the Best of our Knowledge
Science Friday
This American Life
Radio Lab
Le Show
Left Right and Center
Wait wait don't tell me.

For all talk radio they are (IMHO) miles ahead of the non public radio talking heads.

I am not familiar with Le Show, but I'll check for it. I also loved What do you know?, and Sez You. I think Sez You is still on, but none of the above except for Car Talk has ever been on our station, but I've heard several on podcasts.

Commercial radio and TV to me are pretty much a waste of electricity.

No question that NPR, PBS and PRI are miles ahead of commercial radio in talent and taste. But, many of the programs are so expensive that the small outlets can't afford them, and so you have the spiral downward of no money coming in, and cutting programs. They tried to cut CarTalk here once, and it raised a furor, so they got it back, seemingly at the expense of everything else. I used to like it, but it is just the same thing every time any more.
