Rhode Island & Tax Returns ...

Sorry everyone, but this is so cliché it's funny ...

OKay, in 2002 I did some work in RI, sent in my tax returns like a good little boy and I should have received a refund. RI didn't have enough money to pay everyone last year, so they decided to "delay" payments to people as much as possible. It was no great secret and reported widely.

So, they sent me back my tax return in July saying something or other was missing and they couldn't pay me. No biggie, it was just $35 or so. I figured I'd wait until this year to take care of it.

Now, I told my tax guy about it, so he contacted RI so he could get a jump on it before I brought in all my stuff (I think he feels responsible ... he shouldn't). RI claims they never saw it and have no records! I sent it in myself, and they sent it back with a letter. Nice.

Well, going to go see my tax guy today. I wonder what will happen now. I got a bad feeling they'll say they don't have to give me anything since I never sent it in the first place )c:

Rhode Island ... the most corrupt little state in the union.

Nah, if they were the most corrupt, they would come and arrest you for not filing your tax return last year! :)

Nah, arresting costs money! They'd just fine you.

Which actually happened to me when I was 18 and an idiot. :) Illinois owed me $5 back, so I figured it wasn't worth it to fill out the forms and just forgot about it. Four years later, I get a $200 fine for not filing a return, with interest. Out $200 because I overpaid my state taxes in the first place! I contested it, but you can't fight city hall.
