There was an article in the Vancouver Sun newspaper today regarding some things the Pope had to say about Canada. Being Canadian and having some things to say to the Pope, I thought I would respond to him here and in a letter to the editor.

Dear Joe,

"In the name of tolerance, your country (Canada) has had to endure the folly of the redefinition of spouse, and in the name of freedom of choice it is confronted with the daily destruction of unborn children." (Joseph Ratzinger)

Having lived in Canada through the redefinition period, I would just like to tell you, as the German born, Vatican dweller, that Canada hasn't had to "endure" anything except the expansion of personal rights and freedoms.

And freedom of choice!! God forbid anyone be allowed to make up their own mind about something that affects the reality of their life and that no Pope will ever have to deal with. Wait a minute! Wasn't it God that gave people free will so they could make choices? Joe, are you suggesting you know better than God?

The Pope should take a lesson from Canada and its past leaders who had the brains and the balls to, ignore the thoughts of whatever crazy bastard (no offence intended) happened to be occupying the Vatican at the time, and make Canada one of the most progressive countries in the world by allowing same sex marriage and abortion.

I have an idea, Joe. You run your own country. If you want to prove there is a God relevent to Canada, I suggest that at the Winter Olympics in Vancouver 2010, you enter a hockey team to compete against us. If the Vatican team wins, the whole damn country will convert. We'll even allow you to put Jesus in any position you want, though technically, Jesus is a citizen of heaven not the Vatican. To be fair though, if your team loses, you will have to promise to stop spreading your silliness around the world. Being freedom loving Canadians, we will continue to allow you to believe whatever you want, we just insist that you stop claiming it is the one right way to live life and forcing other people to follow it.

In the meantime your Popiness, why don't you explain to us exactly what you were doing during WWII, why the Vatican assisted the Nazis, when all the wealth stolen from other countries and cultures is going to be returned to them and reparations made for the terrible things done in the name of God and the Catholic church. Once you get a timeline for the last two, could you please get your minions to carry them out?

Finally, could you please explain why you believe that subjugation to authority is going to stop events like the rise of Naziism and the Holocaust? Especially an authority as abusive as the church you currently head up? Isn't subjugation what CAUSED those events and fighting against subjugation what ended them?

Perhaps you could toss in a little something on the relevence of the Catholic church, or any religion for that matter, in today's day and age. What is the point of an organization who's teachings of the origin of man have been proven wrong and who's basic moral principles can only be described as "evil?" What words would you offer to the parent that points out that better moral values are taught on television programs such as The Simpsons, South Park and Family Guy?

I look forward to hearing from you.

Sincerely,

Me

The flaw in this argument is that the existance of choice doesn't mean there are not wrong choices.

Considered the date when canada gained it's independance that didn't take balls. In fact it would be illeagal for a catholic to be your head of state.

In the meantime your Popiness, why don't you explain to us exactly what you were doing during WWII,

Err he has.

when all the wealth stolen from other countries and cultures is going to be returned to them

Have to ask the french about that.

and reparations made for the terrible things done in the name of God and the Catholic church.

Reparations? For people who have been dead for centuries?

No Nazism started out as a reaction against the local authority.

Evolution was holding up last I heard.

and who's basic moral principles can only be described as "evil?"

that claim doesn't really hold up.

Or you could use the short version. "Hey Joe, make you a deal. You stay out of Canadian politics and we'll stay out of the pedophile protection racket."

With due respect, you might want to think twice about sending that letter to the editor, at least in its current form. I don't think it accomplishes what you hope. It contains a number of things of which newspaper editors tend to take a dim view, and which at any rate you may not, upon reflection, want associated in writing with your name. For one thing, most of it does not strike me as especially responsive to the quotation from the pope. For another, it is characterized by vague allegations, ad hominem criticisms, baseless and arguably defamatory attacks on the Church, factual inaccuracies and questionable reasoning. The sentiment conveyed to the reader is one of bigotry. Also, the letter is in need of proofreading. Good luck with it, in any event.

Good, that's what I was going for.

The one and only time I sent a letter to a newspaper, it was to congratulate them on getting a story right despite the complaining of the religious community, which is huge here.

I never meant for it to be printed and never gave permission. I did not send it to the editor, I sent it to the reporter. They got my phone number out of the phone book and printed it along with my letter. For the next week or more I got regular phone calls from religious freakazoids telling me how smart the people in their community are.

Apparently, there are a lot of Jesus freaks with nothing but time on their hands and I would get calls at all hours of the day and night. I had call display so I would return their calls between 2:00 and 4:00 am. All the calls that came from cellphones got answered between 10:00 am and noon on Sundays. Do you know how many people leave their cellphones on in church? Quite a few it turns out.:D

So, I doubt the letter will get printed but if it does, I want it to spark up the old religious indignation so I get a bunch more phone calls. This time I will let my son and his friends return them when they are in the middle of their wild, drunken parties.
