Statistical Science, 1991, Vol. 6., No. 4, 363-403, contains very interesting discussions on "REPLICATION AND META-ANALYSIS IN PARAPSYCHOLOGY".

The paper to start off the discussion is by Utts, with following comments by Bayarri and Berger, Dawson, Diaconis, Greenhouse, Hyman, Morris, Mosteller, and then a rejoinder by Utts.

I have this actual issue of Statistical Science, but was very happy to find it all online! :)

It's more than a decade old, and much water has passed under the bridge on this subject since it was published. I would like to see some of that included in any further discussion, if possible, please.

You can read the articles yourself.

I know I can. I asked if you could summarize them.

Not everyone here has an education in Statistics.

Why? You'd probably critique my summarization somehow. Better to read directly from the source and critique that instead.

They do have an abstract of the article in that link. Those usually do a pretty good job of summarizing. ;)

But why do you post it? Why is it "interesting"?

You must have had just an inkling of idea.

Well I like statistics, both theory and methods, as well as parapsychology issues. Combine the two, and I'm in heaven. ;)

What does the paper say that is so interesting?

Lots of stuff about metaanalysis, replication, and power. You should read it :)

Games, tr'olldini. That's all we get from you. Games. And badly played at that.

Well, here we are 13 years later, and no one has bothered to dig this up except someone who is wallowing in statistical heaven...

Yawn.....:s2:

There are some comments in reply to the article on the site

Ray Hyman is Professor of Psychology, University of Oregon
"Honorton's experiments have produced intriguing results. If, as Utts suggests, independent laboratories can produce similar results with the same relationships and the same attention to rigorous methodology, then parapsychology may indeed have finally captured its elusive quarry.Of course, on several previous occasions in its century-plus history, parapsychology has felt it was on the threshold of a breakthrough."

Its the replication part that i'm guessing parapsycology falls down on. I am not knowledgable about the specifics of the experiments being carried out to comment on them tho'.

I took an upper division statistics class from Jessica Utts back in the mid 1980's. As I recall, her "area" was unbounded statistics. I would venture to guess that her paper is more in line with that topic than it is with actual parapsychology. I would venture to say that parapsychology was the topic chosen because she's tired of using the "chance of life in other galaxies" topic.

I'll re-read the paper.

Yeah, you said that in another thread already.

Hey Bill, did you read the papers?

Hey, 13 years ago is probably considered current parapsychological research to some people!! ;)

Diogenes, did you read the papers?

Nope... I'm really not interested...

I skimmed the abstract.. It was... well.... abstract..

It is concluded that the overall evidence indicates that there is an anomalous effect in need of an explanation.

Apparently not enough need for anyone to bother...;)
