No particular reason for starting this thread, other than that I found this site, www.adherents.com, rather interesting.

In particular I found this interesting:

It would be interesting to compare this data(assuming that it is accurate enough to draw a realistic picture) with the same data 10, 20, 30 years ago.

The chart shows that even if, hypothetically, one religion is correct, then most of the worlds' population is doomed. :D

Well at least, if the Logical Deists are wrong, the population of the planet is pretty darn safe (with the possible exception of the joker behind Wraith and Franko - and who knows how many other imaginary sockpuppet characters).

If we have to believe in these stats, atheism is decreasing in the USA...
But I have read recently an inverse report, showing an important grow; does anybody heard the same?

Uh... what happened to Juddaism? Is it in the 3% of "other?" And does Daoism/Taoism fall into "Chinese traditional?"

Well, if you add 'atheists' and 'agnostics' for 2001 and compare to the (only available) 'agnostics' for 1990, there is an increase well above 100%.

It would be interesting to see the data on the percentage of world religions 100 years in the future.

My guess it's likely to be pretty much the same, possibly a few more atheist and agnostics. I would hope for more agnostics and atheists in the future, but people don’t give up religion easily.

The world will be on the right track when that chart says 95% atheist/agnostic 5% other...

Do you really think that the world would be better off if we were all atheists? I'm sure people would be perfectly capable of finding other excuses to kill each other.

And why would they want to? What does atheism have to offer?

"Right track", interesting choice of words. You know The Truth (tm) apparently.

I was going to say that!

The world might find a different excuse to kill, but religion is a very powerful excuse to kill. I think the world wouldn't be ideal, but it would be better without religion.
