Is anyone up for a Red Rocks trip at some point during TAM? There's no official geology tour this year, but I'm itching to get out there for at least part of a day as it's so beautiful and such a refreshing change of scenery from The Strip. Anyway, I'm out of climbing shape because of a recent, small surgery, but I'd definitely be up for a day hike or even just driving around the tourist loop. Let me know... I'm free most of the day on Thursday, and I can also be persauded to skip certain speakers.

Well, I didn't get my request off from work in soon enough. I'm supposed to work through TAM... but I'm starting to feel a little sick :D

If I call in sick, going for a hike with a bunch of fellow skeptics would probably improve my health. i.e. I'm up for it.

When are you arriving and leaving?
Sunday afternoon always seems to work pretty well, but if you have to leave too early, well ...

We booked our departure for Monday afternoon specifically so we could do something like this on Sunday or Monday (we're arriving early afternoon Thursday, probably too late for us on that day). I was hoping the guided tour would be repeated this year, but if it isn't, I'd be interested in taking part in an ad hoc group.

And now for those five magic words: We'll have a rental car.

Excellent... Sunday afternoon could work.

I'm a geologist and was one of the tour guides for last year, so I'd be willing to give a (much smaller) geological tour for whomever is interested. I'm not an expert in the local geology, but I've done some field work in the Red Rocks area, so I know enough to at least make up impressive-sounding answers for your various geology questions. :-)

I'm up for it. You'll probably want to bring a stout stick or cattle prod or something to keep me from collecting too many rocks.

Just remember: you are the one carrying it all back home again, not us. And if you slow us down, we'll leave you behind and save ourselves :p

I am no good at not collecting rocks. Ask my parents. I think my dad had to reinforce the floor underneath my room at home so that all the rocks wouldn't fall through. I'm going on a research cruise this summer on which I plan to collect thousands of kilos of rocks. So, yeah, someone else should carry the cattle prod...

Do remind me to collect a sandstone concretion for the Bad Astronomer, though. I lost his (accidentally) last year.

Okay, so Sunday afternoon it is? I fly out Monday morning, so that works for me.

Oh bother, Thursday would be best for me. I want to do the Atomic Testing Museum/Gun store trip on Sunday. I promised to skip in the parking lot at the Gun Store with Tobias. Red Rocks was wonderful last year. What a beautiful place. It was a nice hike and I got so many great pics. I'd love to do it again.

Two trips might be too much of a good thing ...

Will you be able to point out which rocks are a full 6,000 years old?

Kitten,

PM me a firm(ish) time and date, and I'll put it on the Unofficial List.

I scheduled a rental car at ~12 Sunday. I'll get it at the Stratosphere and return it with me to the airport Monday. I was thinking of looking for meteorites.

Keep in mind, I look for meteorites everywhere and have yet to find one anywhere but a store or rock show. However, I know more each time I go. Deserts are better places to look than the rain forest I live in because rain hastens the rock's metamorphosis to one of terrestrial nature.

Anyway, any nice hiking area will do and I was thinking of heading toward the same area. I've already been the entire Death Valley around to area 51 route, but never went east of Vegas. So I'm interested and can take a few folks as well with the caveat I'm terrible for wanting to look just one more place....

So I'll leave it as a maybe for now.

This sounds like lots of fun. We might be in, depending on what day.
