I'm looking for some history books on the following subjects:

Alexander the Great
The Celts
Byzantium
The Persians
Chartage

I'm searching through Amazon, etc, but it's hard to know what's good, ie as up-to-date and fact-based as possible. So if any of you have any suggestions, I would appreciate it very much. Thanks.

People tell me I'm a wiseass but I don't know why. Anyway, book suggestions, one per subject:

Alexander the Great:
My Life: I Go Out To Score Some NyQuil For Helen Of Troy And End Up Conquering The World

The Celts:
We Had To Come To Boston And We Don't Even Like Clam Chowder Nor Baked Beans Neither

Byzantium:
A Bizarre Anthem On Them Chrysanthemums Of Byzantium

The Persians:
Vacuum Cleaners And Persian Cats: A Symbiosis Of Shedding

Carthage:
The Rise Of Hannibal

One of the best bio of Alexander that I've read is by Peter Green and Called Alexander the Great...accessible and well written.

Byzantium...anything by John Norwich. If you are ambitious, his three voume history is spectacular. He has a one volume version that is also good..though obviously limited. In addition, there is the Alexiad by Anna Comnena...a great book on life at the Byzantine court during the crusades by the emperor's daughter...and for a really fun time, try Procopius' The Secret History...the behind the scenes (and accuracy challenged) account of all of the sex, drugs and rock and roll at the court of Justinian and Theodora. A finer piece of hatchet liturature you will not find...a terrific read. Finally, the Fall of Constantinople by Stephen Runciman (and any of Runciman's books on the Crusades or Byantium, as is true with the books of Donald Nicol) is great.
