How come the new netbooks that companies are bringing out are getting better specked and much more expensive. The more expensive netbooks are now more expensive than cheap laptops. Once netbooks had a niche but now they are competing with laptops in terms of price and functionality.
How come it is often much cheaper to buy software on disc than it is to buy it via download? We are talking a third of the price as well.

I've never heard of the latter. But I haven't bought software as such for about 20 years. Can you give an example?

Why not continue the discussion here in this thread?

Here is the PM
Zuma (game) £15 download less than £6 from Startup Media.
Kaspersky internet security 2009. Download for £30 in the sale or 11 to twelve quid online from CCL or lambda tec.

I see where Wudang is coming from.

I would think what you are seeing is the difference between buying direct from the maker versus the effects of multiple middlemen, who have differing marketing desires - like selling below cost to get people to visit their website, or increasing their volume percentage. Also, people who sell something themselves for, say, $20 might be willing to sell it for $10 to someone who wants 50 of them, which the buyer can then unload for $12 each and move on to the next thing.

I think that netbooks can't be compared to laptops.

The price is mostly brand name and, of course, portability.

Most of them come with Windows XP and some rare models with Linux.

1GB RAM, because it's XP. Most don't have cd drive and enough ports like regular laptops.

Every computer is made with a specific intention. Don't be fooled by the 160GB HDD some carry.

Netbooks are just portability and internet, maybe some minor documents.

That's what I think.

I have no idea what the actual stats are, but certainly netbooks with Linux are not rare. A quick google has told me nothing much, but I was under the impression that XP was still catching up with Linux on the netbook market.
Not that I'm advocating one over the other in this thread!

Oh I forgot to mention that I was just talking about where I work. We had Linux models but just like 2. They were Eee PC (Asus).

The other ones are XP, such as HP, DELL, ASUS, ACER...
