radioactivity conversion

So 1 milli-curie is 37 Mbq?

Ha! heard on the news this morning that the greenies are complaining that the Sellafield nuclear processing plant has increased its radioactivity leakage by 2- 20 bequerels!

Thats not even background!

Idiots.

Translation for dummies???

Both curies and becquerels are units of radioactivity, corresponding to the rate of nuclear disintegrations in a particular radioactive element, which in turn corresponds to the amount of radiation given off by the element. Simply speaking, the higher the number, the more "radiactive" the material.

A "curie" is the old unit of radioactivity, which corresponds to the amount of radioactivity emitted by 1g of radium.

A "becquerel" is the shiny new unit, where one becquerel corresponds to 1 disintegration per second.

So 2-20 becquerel corresponds to 2-20 disintegrations per second, which isn't very much!
