Radio commentators on TV

I got into listening to Glenn Beck during the sixth months that I was laid off. He used to crack me up. Funny guy. Unfortunately, his show airs from 8am to 11am, so when I went back to work, no more Glenn Beck. :(

A few months ago, Glenn Beck got his own TV program on one of the news channels. I forget which one. I thought, 'hey, awesome! Now I will be able to catch Glenn Beck every so often!'. Well, I've seen about 5 of his programs and I'm terribly disappointed. I don't really know why. It's the same guy, same voice, same material, but I don't even crack a smile when I watch. What could it be? Maybe it's his dorky face? Maybe it's his suit and tie? The only comedian that I recall that I liked that continuously wore a suit and tie was Rodney Dangerfield, and Glenn Beck is no Rodney Dangerfield. Why is the Glenn Beck TV show not working for me?

Its the same way with all radio commentators. I enjoy listening to Bill O'Reilly's radio program during lunch, but I can't stomach him on TV. I can tolerate Sean Hannity on the radio, but when I see him on TV even for a second, I want to throw a brick at him. I would mention Howard Stern, but I hate his guts on both radio and TV, so he doesn't count.

Do you feel the same way? If so, what are your theories?
 
Rush had a TV show some years back. I think it only lasted one season. I like him from time to time on the radio but his show sucked.

I can't stand Hannity in either medium. O'Reilly is tolerable in either but just barely.

Then again, how would Colbert to in radio? What about Stewart? I'm guessing, not to well.

Stewart depends on rolling his eyes, and the funny faces he makes when making a "straightforward" remark.

You know who did well in the radio-TV crossover?
Howard Stern.
C'mon, admit it, that guy really is better on TV!

I think O'Reilly is awesome at both.

Hannity is booooooring, and Colbert is funny as hell. :p
 
I agree that Jon Stewart would probably fall flat in radio, but I think Stephen Colbert could make it work. I think Colbert has a lot more versatility and, dare I say, talent. Sure, much of his humor can be visual, but a lot of it also has to do with his tone of voice. I think he could figure out how to take control of that medium and work it to his advantage.

Colbert tends to stutter a lot though. Tolerable on TV, but probably not on the radio.

You have a point; even though "The Colbert Report" isn't aired live, it seems to be filmed in one take, including Colbert's many bloopers.

But there's nothing saying that a radio show couldn't be recorded and edited.

I've had the opposite experience. I thought Beck's show sucked and that he is more entertaining on tv.
