Race-hate killing in Sydney?

It seems that a racially-inspired murder may have occured in Sydney on Boxing Day.

Jim Tautari, who was a fairly imposing Maori bloke, appears to have been murdered by a white teenage gang.

Racial tension in Sydney hasn't been too flash in recent times, but this would be a new twist as most of the trouble has been against Mid-Eastern people.

Ugh, all the politicians are eager to say Australia isn't a racist country, but I have to say they're wrong.

I'm Australian, I live in Sydney but I'm not racist. However you'd have to be blind to say Australia doesn't have a massive problem with racism.

There's a difference between carrying your golf clubs home just as there's a difference carrying your rifle home from the gun shop.

I think you're confusing Sydney with Australia. For some reason racial discrimination/violence seems to be much worse there than in other parts of the country.

Of course, that's not to say the rest of the country is squeaky clean, but from what I've seen the rest is much better than Sydney.

This provides an opportune time to look back at our proud racial history: The White Australia Policy, The Immigration Restriction Act and of course when we finally decided that Aborigines were in fact Australians.

And we criticized South Africa for Apartheid. Pot, meet Kettle.

I think you're confusing Sydney with Australia. For some reason racial discrimination/violence seems to be much worse there than in other parts of the country.

The difference was - when presented with an injustice, the white population of Australia reacted with a 90% yes vote for inclusion of Aboriginals in the voting system

In South Africa all they got was a rubber hose in the face and a mouth full of tear gas. I refuse to be asked to explain moral imperitives of the past. Do we condem modern Germans because of Hitler, or the French because of Napoleon. If you want to attack over issues such as the Tampa incident, and Children Overboard or even the Pacific solution, then please go hard, and you would be right. Both where products of a govenment voted in during my time.

And I do disagree at the level of racism being any better or worse than other parts of the country. WA's royal commision into black deaths in custody, showed a level of systemic racism that genuinely shocked the rest of the country. Sure the obvious response is the Cronulla riots - but I believe that had less to do with racism, and more about tribalism.

The Shire has always been a little odd in its outlook, and has never thought of the rest of Sydney being good enough to visit. To many residence of the area there are only two types of people in the world - locals and the rest of the planet. That attitude has been around since the early 70's that I have direct knowledge of.

Darwin, racism isn't exactly unknown.

It does appear to be less of a problem in Adelaide, but I've never seen a dark one down there and I note that Aboriginals make up a whopping 1% of the population.

Taking the Indian + Chinese + Lebanese as a quick guide, then Aboriginal + Pacific Islander + Maori (in brackets) as an alternative grouping, I come up with the following percentages:

Sydney = 10% (1.3%)
Melbourne = 6% (0.5%)
Perth = 4% (0.6%, dominated by 80% Maori)
Brisbane = 6% (1.4%)
Adelaide = 3% (0.2%, no wonder I've never seen one!)

These are self-identified cultural selections in the last Australian Census.

Interesting that given the racial disharmony in Aussie to compare the paragon of racial harmony, Auckland, where the same statistical analysis is impossible due to the pathetically inadequate details online, but it does note that the Auckland region has 8% of its population born in the Pacific Islands, 13% born in Asia, plus about 14% Maori.

Well, yes, partly Melbourne. It's hard to be racist on the whole when most of the worlds cultures have adopted Melbourne as a home away from home.

Agree entirely. Melbourne has always rightly prided itself on its cultural mix and it's hard to start racist agendas in a city where half the population doesn't identify as "white" or Australian. Plus, anywhere which has a holiday for a horse race has to have one of the better senses of true perspective ever.

Darwin's an unfortunately-named place really - I'm not sure Charles would want anything to do with it! I have a couple of mates who worked there for a while and I understand racial harmony is not the best.
