R.I.P. Malcolm Fraser

A true Liberal as opposed to this current Conservative, right wing ideological party.
A big loss.

Hear Hear. He was a good bloke in his later life and I respected his later political comments.

Agreed. I despised the guy when he was in power, but as he got older he really typified the classic elder statesmen.

You have 5 too many words at the end of that sentence.

Vale Fraser.

OK, I hated what he did in 1975, and I hated many of his policies, but he stood up for what he believed in and was a giant compared to the pygmies we now have as politicians.

I was too young to know anything about 1975.

I can't remember a time when Malcolm Fraser wasn't someone to look up to.

Thanks, icerat, for this thread, and to all participating.

May we see more statesmen and women of his recent stature guiding this country from the driver's seat.

Not only will I never forgive him for 1975, I will never forget his do-nothing prime ministership. He could easily have commenced the reform process so successfully implemented by Hawke and Keating. He lacked the guts and intellectual capacity to do so. No crocodile tears from me.

Bugger all. Next to nothing. He was PM for 8 bloody years. He did nothing on the economy. Nothing on Industrial Relations. No nation building projects.

Do you really think these "highlights" have great significance? Hosting a royal tour? Calling referenda? Enacting laws that were the work of others?

Holt and Gorton were worse PMs, but they had much shorter terms. Fraser was a most disappointing, do-nothing PM.
