I received an e-mail from my parents (still devoutly christians and extremely conservative) regarding the "keep god in the pledge and on our money" thing. It said:
Aside from being incredibly offensive, it got me thinking:
Is there a survey out there that breaks down that 86%?
What percentage of Americans believe in the judeo-christian god? What about allah? And what percentage believes in the pagan gods? How many are ceramonial deists? And of the judeo-christian crowd, how many are bible literalists?
I think it's entirely possible to deal with the study quoted in this e-mail by showing that the 86% has WIDELY differing definitions of "god".
A recent survey shows that 86% of all Americans believe in God, yet there's a big deal about having "In God we trust" on our money and saying "under God" in the pledge. Isn't it about time we told the other 14% to SIT DOWN AND SHUT UP?!
