Putin seems to be taking a page out of Kim Il-Sung's playbook:

What does his likely return to the Presidency in 2012 (meaning that come 2020 he will have been effectively running Russia for nearly quarter of a century) mean for the world?

Russia is a lovely place, nothing to worry about. Just check out Medvedev's tweets.

Visited the Kuril Islands for the first time today. Spoke with the people there and toured a geothermal power stat http://twitpic.com/32zmga

It is the president's duty to oversee the development of every region of the country, including the most remote ones

Returning from a productive trip to Turkmenistan. This is my first tweet from a plane.

Have been looking through my photos from France. This is one of a street in Honfleur http://twitpic.com/2zb5uq

(Doesn't that "geothermal power station" picture look like someone doing something utterly evil in their garden shed?)

On one hand it looks like a set from the TV show "Lost"

On the other hand Japan recalled its envoy to Russia a day after Medvedev visited Kuril Isles.

I'm still getting over the photos of Dmitry Medvedev and Arnold Schwarzenegger driving around North russia in an old Russian car talking about trees. They actually did look like friends going on a fishing trip (which is probably a good thing)

No, they aren't. The photo in the OP is from the same series where he got half nekkid with a cross. No idea (*cough*) why this is news for the telegraph.

No, they're not. These pictures were recently released by Putin. You can see the difference in that he's actually wearing a jacket.

I first saw these pictures in the Norwegian Dagbladet a few days ago, where they speculate that these pictures may play a role in him running for president again - and that they were released the day before a demonstration against the current regime on October 31st. Of this year.

The Daily Mail also reports that these pictures are new.

The Huffington Post also reports that these pictures are new.

Perhaps you should send them all a mail and explain that these are actually old pictures, and include a reference to where they were published before?

Ok ok, i retract my statement. They are indeed new. And i agree that it's fortunate that he kept his clothes on this time. 2007 was the series i thought of (several pics are featured in the telegraph slideshow). The vulgar display of power must have made a lasting impression on me.

Putin had a lot of power upon eastern Europe. If he becomes Russian President again, there is no question that he will play as top3 leaders in the world especially in 10 years time.

Putin's current media play is a 2000 km. drive across Siberia in a bright yellow Lada Kalina. Showing off the latest in Russian cars and the recently completed highway across Russia.

But like most political stunts, it's mostly illusion. Here is video captured by a four wheel drive club showing the convoy, the spare yellow Lada and another yellow Lada that has already broken down.

Even the most patriotic Russian would only purchase a Lada when threatened with that other great Russian product: the AK-47.
