A law proposed in Alberta and supported by the Education Minister would require schools to notify parents in advance of "subject-matter that deals explicitly with religion, sexuality or sexual orientation,". The bill, if passed, would allow parents to ask that their children be excused from classroom discussions of the parents choosing. The Premier has stated that this will allow parents to excuse their children from discussion of evolution. The question was raised on CBC Radio this afternoon of how far does this extend, can parents refuse to have their children study the poetry of Allen Ginsberg because he was gay?

coool I ALWAYS hated math and I just KNOW that quadratic equations are the work of the devil - I won;t allow my children to be exposed to such wickedness.

I believed that Canadians were saner than Americans, but it seems I was wrong.

It would be great if schools had to notify parents in advance of the "delicate" subjects and make it mandatory for the kids to attend. The parents with opposing view would surely lecture the kids on the subject beforehand. Later, the insight from comparing different points of view would make the learning experience much more valuable.

What the heck. Evolution explicitly does NOT deal with religion. While it's nice to know that the US isn't the only insane place on the planet in this regard, I feel for Albertans...

I lived in Ottawa for a year, quite a while back, so my dealings were mostly with residents of Ontario and Quebec. This may have skewed my perception. Not to say that Québécois are a definition of sanity (particularly those from Montréal), but they are crazy in their own charismatic way.

Well, that covers most of history, biology, and sociology. WOnder what they can mess with next?

Does. Not. Follow.

Stupid idiots, you can't just designate everything you don't like a rival religion. As someone above said, what if I hate math and want to avoid having to sit through it? The secular Theorem of Pytaghora's offends my religious beliefs, lemme out!

As for sexual "sexuality or sexual orientation"... what if I don't want my kids to learn that African-Americans and Caucasians are equal? If Christian hate-mongers get to skip tolerance lessons, why can't other bigots?
