HER: Norton suddenly today started popping up literally every 30 seconds, a message that says "your computer is at risk because firewall protection is turned off"

HER: and this message pops up every 30 seconds
SaharaOnTheMoon: and i can't figure out what it's doing or how to get rid of it

HER: and now, in Outlook, it won't send my messages

HER: it says "an encrypted email has been detected"

HER: and it won't send ti

HER: it

Thanks in advance.

Hi There,
Is she using Windows XP with Service Pack 2? She can check this by right-clicking on the My Computer icon in her desktop then select "Properties". Under the "System" heading should read Service Pack 2.

If she's got Service Pack 2, check the firewall settings:
Click on "Start"->"Settings"->"Control Panel". In the Control Panel, double click "Windows Firewall". In the Firewall Window, make sure the "General" tab is selected. Make sure the "On (recommended)" selection is chosen. Reboot the the computer to make sure the setting takes effect.

Now if she doesn't have Windows XP SP2, then post back here and tell us what version of windows she's using and what the name of the firewall software is.

Run a complete virus scan on the system. If the scanner picks up anything it should alert her. She should get an option to repair, delete, or quarantine the infected file. Try repairing it first, if not quarantine, last hope is delete. Be very careful on this one, if the file is an infected SYSTEM file, and you delete it, you may have hosed Windows. Reinstall may be the result.

Try these things first and let us know.
