So, 22,000 people tracked the aeroplane bringing UK Cabinet Minister Priti Patel back from Africa to face Prime Minister Theresa May at Downing Street.

OJ Bronco-style tv news helicopters are tracking her black limo on its way from Heathrow to Central London.

The real question is, if PM Theresa May knew about Patel's 'secret' meetings with Nethanyahu, Israeli Prime Minister, it is not rather hypocritical of her to sack Patel, and should PM May not go herself?
 
Looks like it is JEWISH CHRONICLE editor, Stephen Pollard, claiming that Theresa May knew of the breach-of-protocol meetings, which included an offer to help fund the Israeli Army and a Syrian hospital in what the UK considers to be illegally occupied territory [Golan Heights], without any civil servant present, and whilst claiming to be 'on holiday'.

Problem is, the JC is a pro-Israel paper and could be said to be 'covering Patel's back', because it enjoys the advantages Patel appears to be offering Nethanyahu's government.
 
Answer is no as she chose to resign, doubtless to avoid the embarrassment of the inevitable sacking.
 
Looks like the weak Theresa May did indeed know about the meetings, then. This looks like a compromise and the JEWISH CHRONICLE claims are correct.

I can't see anything wrong with that - it wasn't exactly the flight of Rudolph Hess was it?

She visited the occupied territory and had at least one meeting with Israeli officials/politicians there. British policy is that Israel should not be occupying this territory and therefore no government minister should hold a meeting with any Israeli official or politician in that territory as this could be seen to somehow legitimize Israel's illegal occupation.

Add to that the fact that she didn't follow the normal protocols to let other ministers and civil servants know about the meetings, and that the meetings weren't properly recorded and it was inevitable that she should be sacked. She escaped a sacking by resigning first - arguably May shouldn't have let her do that and should have just sacked her anyway.

It's a massive breach of protocol for ministers to meet foreign politicians under such circumstances, not least because said ministers could send mixed signals to said politicians. It seems that Patel blithely discussed matters relating to certain territories, the occupation of which by Israel the UK does not recognise as being legitimate.

she also lied about the number of meetings when and the circumstances, which is probably what finished her off. Though I doubt discussing the idea of giving tax payers money to the Israeli military to treat Syrian refugees helped.

She was minister of International Development. Why squander that money on a first-world state (that already gets to the tune of $2bn/year military aid from the US)?
 
Another nail in this government's coffin. How they keep limping along is one question, but why they bother to keep limping along is the one that's really interesting. They must know they're a disaster for the country, but do they seriously suppose they're protecting the country from something even worse, i.e. a Corbyn-led government?

Not long ago Tories were rubbing their hands with glee at the idea of spending three pounds to vote Corbyn as leader. Now they face the possibility of collapsing so badly themselves that Corbyn could become prime minister. How useless do they have to be to allow that to happen?

Patel does not seem to appreciate that the Arabs regard Israel as an alien state on Arab lands. She ignores the force of Arab nationalism. I don't want to drive Israel into the sea. I was under the impression Arafat eventually recognized Israel's right to exist. Netanyahu just seems to want Israeli expansion, and ignoring any two state solution, and ejectment orders for Palestinians, and endless negotiations, and war with Iran, and accusing anybody who does not have unquestioning support for Israel as being anti-Semitic.
 
I think everyone is being unfair to her. It's a British tradition to go on holiday and undermine the foreign standing of the country. It's hardly her fault she aimed a little higher than the usual getting drunk and annoying the local population.

The politician is an entirely selfish species.

Much like the self gene, the politician cares about one thing and one thing only. And that is the attaining and retaining of power.

They do not for a moment suppose that what they are doing has any bearing on the country.

Suggesting to a politician that they are not doing the country any good would be like suggesting to a tapeworm that it is not doing its host any good. Both may be true, but neither has the biological ability to voluntarily remove itself from its position, regardless of the suffering they are causing.

I actually have a pet CT that Patel was put up to doing this as a way to circumvent Johnson.

Lets face it, the last thing you need is that incompetent nincompoop putting his massive foot in the powder keg of the middle east.

Unfrotunately, Patel got found out and the whole thing became unmanageble. After a quick clear of May's cache and a hard re-boot, Patel was eventually recalled. She'll be back though.
