Never too early to start the speculation!

We know at least that the democratic nomination will be up for grabs, regardless of the result in 2012. Already there seems to speculation focused on NY Governor Andrew Cuomo:

Cuomo jumpstarts 2016 speculation

The 2016 Democratic presidential race just began.

With his successful push to pass a gay marriage law, New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo overnight became a national contender, putting down a major marker among the liberal party base that dominates the primaries.

"Most politicians, including most Democrats, have been afraid of this issue. Andrew is the first national figure ever to embrace it so enthusiastically," said Richard Socarides, the president of Equality Matters and a former Clinton White House advisor. "Clearly, this establishes him as the most important progressive leader of our party, setting him up very well for 2016."

Come 2016, "Cuomo is the only one who will be able to say 'I delivered for you' before everyone else realized it was politically popular, and that will be an invaluable asset," Socarides said, adding, "it also has the benefit of being true."

Older liberals will fondly remember his father.

Hillary Clinton has said that she won't run again. Joe Biden is a possibility run I suppose, but I don't see him as a frontrunner by any means, like Al Gore was.

I have no idea about the republican side. Much will depend of course on the result of the 2012 election.

I was going to say it's too early to tell what will happen by then, but yes, this is the perfect time for Cuomo to step up as a contender!

I've read that Hillary Clinton is interested in retiring from politics and doing advocacy work on behalf of women and children. While I was initially disappointed about this, I think she can truly enact more positive change in this way. For instance, Hillary truly wanted to support the Saudi women in their protest for the right to drive, but she had to keep her support fairly silent lest it destroy US-Saudi diplomacy.

Alan Grayson has not crawled off in a corner to sulk. He may be back big time. It would be so nice to have a Democrat with a big pair of brass ones fighting back against the spoiled kids who seem to have taken over the House of Representatives.

Grayson is going nowhere nationally. Florida, maybe. He's the Democratic equivalent of Cain. Loud. Brash. Name-caller. Uncompromising (deadly in a politician). Hey, lefty, he's not unlike you! :)

I'd say Huntsman is really just setting himself up to be a serious contender in 2016. He hasn't got the machine behind him right now to compete with Romney and some of the bigger names, but in five years, maybe he will. Of course for the GOP, a lot depends on who wins this time. The Democratic field is wide open for 2016. I'm expecting some governor will start working the media over the next few years.

Andrew Cuomo is nowhere near as personable as his father, and the gay marriage bit will unite those who oppose gay marriage against him (including a very sizable chunk of the black electorate).

Don't count Joe Biden out:

Vice President Joe Biden surprised a gathering of donors in Cincinnati last week when he floated the prospect of his succeeding President Barack Obama in the White House.

Biden, who started in the Senate young and would be just 70 in 2012, raised the possibility unprompted during a wide-ranging conversation at the May 19 dinner with major Democratic Party donors, a source in the room said.

Of course, that bit about Biden being "just" 70 in 2012 is rather silly; he would be "just" 74 in 2016, five years older than Reagan was in 1980, and Reagan was the oldest man elected president.

But like I said, don't count him out, especially if Obama wins reelection in 2012. The last sitting VP who sought but did not receive the nomination of his party upon the retirement (either lame-duck or otherwise) of the President? Hasn't happened in my lifetime; Nixon in 1960, Humphrey 1968, Poppy Bush in 1988 and Gore in 2000 were all successful.

Now I understand how people who aren't obsessed with the NFL Draft feel like when I start talking about the 2012 draft two weeks after the 2011 draft.

If the momentum on gay marriage continues apace, by 2016 it will be practically a requirement for at least democratic candidates.

Joe Biden may run, but like you said, he'll be 74 in 2016, and while he's run before, he's never been able to get more than the low single digits in support. I think democrats will be looking for a new younger champion.
