Poser? (Body drawing packages)

I got a recommendation on this forum from someone who used Poser and said that there was a freeware package that did most of the things. Unfortunately, that was before the Great Forum Upgrade, and I can't access my old PMs, and a casual google only shows the full package, which is expensive.

I need something to draw simple, low-weight images such as the attached ones of a waiter and a customer. The exact style doesn't matter much, but they need to be cartoonish so that they will shrink down to <3K in GIF format. They should be able to express poses and facial expressions. Very short animations of three or four images would be a big plus.

This is for a free collaborative foreign language program that is just ramping up. The discussion is here: http://www.iidb.org/vbb/showthread.php?t=140567&page=1&pp=25

Might be overkill (Poser definitely would be overkill), but check out Blender: http://www.blender3d.com/

See if it meets your needs by reading the user guide (which I just glanced through and there is a simple character animation tutorial): http://www.blender3d.org/documentation/htmlI/

Can't beat the price.

I own Poser and I'm sure to finally get to playing with it one of these days (he says after owning it for a year or so...).

If the figures are as simple as the attachments, maybe just use a paint program like Paint Shop Pro and find a program that will assemble images into an animated gif (can't remember if PSP can do that on its own or not).

Someone once levelled the criticism that people rendered in Poser all look like corpses. I think they're right.
