from CNN: Archbishop of San Francisco new enforcer

The new pope has picked a replacement for himself as the head of the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith, which of course dropped the bad-tasting word "Inquisition" from its title long ago. But inquisition it is nonetheless. Just ask Father Reese, lately of the magazine America, who's firing was engineered by Ratzi just before JP Saintmaker died.

Of course Laveda is well qualified, being yet another in a long line of child-rape ditherers/enablers in the church hierarchy, like Ratzi himself.

Interesting. Levada (being archbishop of San Francisco) was damage control guy for a priest/former teacher of mine (a friend/contemporary of Levada), who got involved in a strange kept-man/priest sex/financial scandal in Santa Rosa, CA a few years ago.

G. Pat Ziemann, a local bishop, and my former teacher, apparently put some boytoy with ambitions of Holy Orders (who was a slimy character himself) on the fast track for ordination, seemingly in exchange for being "best buddies". The ensuing mess ended up costing the diocese tens of millions of dollars in lost funds (not to mention the legal costs) while the goofball priests/lovers involved were quietly carted away to remote desert hidaways, where they apparently can't get into too much trouble.

Lots of rank and file of the region are pretty wary of Levada and his attempts to keep up appearances at all costs.

In his response to the sex-abuse crisis Archbishop Levada has shown a distinct bias toward protecting clerics-- and especially his fellow bishops-- rather than satisfying victims and reassuring the faithful. In his response to public debates on Church teachings, he has shown an instinct for tactical diplomacy rather than bold confrontation. Presumably Pope Benedict XVI felt that this knack for compromise was a desirable quality, to be sought in the new prefect for the CDF.
