Polio returns to the US

I'm just old enough to remember kids with calipers (and worse) after surviving polio so just can't imagine that people are willing to take such a risk with a child's life and future is terrible.

It should not be possible for parents in a civilised society to impose their religious beliefs on a future citizen of that society. I would like to see parents who take such action to be prosecuted for child abuse and child neglect.

That, unfortunatly, is part of the double-edged sword of freedom.

I know a lot of people disagree but I always put the rights of a child before those of the parent. One of the rights a child should have in a civilised society is to be given the chance to become a member of that society no matter what the views of their parents are.

I'm not sure about the USA but in the UK a parent cannot prevent a child having necessary medical treatment based on their religious beliefs. However for some reason vaccination is not seen as a necessary medical treatment and that leaves kids vulnerable to this type of abuse and neglect.

Bet this story will encourage the anti-vax brigade.

From above link
...snip....

Genetic testing shows the polio involved likely originated overseas in an infant who had been vaccinated with a live polio virus, state epidemiologist Dr. Harry Hull said. That kind of vaccine has not been used in the United States for five years.

I agree.
It is abusive and neglectful.
I expect this will be a contentious point for years to come.
The principle of self determination, extending to one's family, is a very thorny subject.
So it goes.

I don't have a link, but CBS news just announced that polio has broken out in Amish communities.

Such a pity that religious beliefs block public health issues.

Dave

Didn't this happen a week or two ago? Two Amish kids were tested, and they had the polio virus.

Of course, the majority of people who get the polio virus don't develop the full-blown, muscle-spasm-and-bone-crippling version of the disease.
