Plans advancing for world's first face transplant

John Travolta and Nick Cage, I've already seen this film. Nothing like a sensuous foot rub scene with Joan Allen.

Yes

I read about this a while back. Seems truly creepy to me, but I guess the alternative is worse. It seems to me I read about the guy who had a hand transplant - that the whole hand thing started to gross him out and he had it removed, but I might have dreamed that or something. It is one thing to have someone else's body part inside of you, but it is something else to be confronted with it constantly.

I find it ghoulish fascinating. I am wondering what level of movement could be expected in the face after the transplant, how will they attach the nerves that deal with all the subtle movements the face makes? Will it look like a fleshy mask?

As for the social issues I don’t think there are any, it's a matter of technology; if we can do it then I can’t think of any objection to it happening at all.

No that was real, he even stopped taking the anti-rejection drugs so he started to have rejection problems. http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/world/europe/1151553.stm

I've seen some other pictures of hand transplants and they seemed much more aesthetically pleasing, his seemed very badly matched in he first place.

Strangely the hand transplants make me squirm more then the face transplant idea.

true but last I heard he wanted it back.

The thing which has always worried me about this is, what happens if you get a rejection? However bad the situation was before, wouldn't the problems after a rejection be infinitely worse? I see from the article that this is a major concern.

Rolfe.

Maybe because you see your own hands all the time, but your face only in mirrors and photographs.

If you had a different face, your loved ones might feel weird, since they'll be the ones looking at it.

There is a book by Shizuko Natsuki, Portal of the Wind, that deals with something similar but more extreme: whole head transplants, and the effects. It's a pretty good read, if a bit creepy.

I don't know, the idea of licking spagetti sauce off of someone elses lips while I eat I find truly revolting. Well, Selma Hayek's lips would be ok.

Face transplant.

There's hope for me to be a ladykiller hottie yet...
