Plane Crash In DC

As you might expect, Mick West at Metabunk has some clues and a good theory. (Helicopter pilot was looking at and avoiding the wrong plane)

In contrast, President Palpatine hasn't got one clue but still finds some soothing words of blame.

The airplane was on a perfect and routine line of approach to the airport. The helicopter was going straight at the airplane for an extended period of time. It is a CLEAR NIGHT, the lights on the plane were blazing, why didn't the helicopter go up or down, or turn. Why didn't the control tower tell the helicopter what to do instead of asking if they saw the plane. This is a bad situation that looks like it should have been prevented. NOT GOOD.

At this point, 28 bodies have been recovered, and they don't expect to find any survivors.

As for The Orange ◊◊◊◊◊◊◊:

What the ◊◊◊◊ does he know about it? What other president or other important official would make such a clueless statement?

You do know he will use ANY excuse to ◊◊◊◊-post on socials, day and night.

Anyone consider what the effects of the threat of a serious government employment shake up might have on the already stressful job of air traffic controller?
You know, just asking questions...

From what I've read, it seems to be the responsibility of the armed forces pilot to avoid the civilian plane, which will just continue on its scheduled flightplan.

The ATC guys will be in coms with both planes though. I imagine the ATC guy or gal handling the interaction will not sleep well tonight. Or possibly ever again. Must be bloody devastating for them.

The FAA director resigned on the day of Trump's inauguration under pressure from Elon Musk

Any numbers on the altitudes? Was the helicopter at the altitude it was supposed to fly at?
The collision occurred at approximately 400 feet. The airliner was on a difficult final approach. The helicopter was on a path consistent with the military unit's longstanding policy of "darting" across these approaches on takeoff, provided they have visibility consistent with visual separation rules. Both aircraft were where they were supposed to be, but obviously it's an inherently dangerous arrangement.

“We had a situation where you had a helicopter that had the ability to stop… You can stop a helicopter very quickly. It had the ability to go up or down, it had the ability to turn. And the turn it made was not the correct turn, obviously, and did somewhat the opposite of what it was told,”

“They shouldn’t have been at the same height, because if it was at the same height, you could have gone under it or over it, and nobody realized, or they didn’t say, that it’s at the same height… It could have been 1000 feet higher, it could have been 200 feet lower, but it was exactly at the same height and somebody should have been able to point that out,”

Wise words indeed...

Indeed, now being reported that the helicopter should have remained below 200 feet for visual separation rules, and was likely flying too high to cross the Potomac River safely.

This is correct. The helicopter pilot wishing to take off and cross the approach must first be advised by ATC regarding approach and departure traffic and confirm suitable conditions for visual separation rules (i.e., that you can see the reported traffic). There is no direct communication between aircraft, and TCAS does not provide resolutions below 1000 feet. The ceiling for crossing the river under the approach is 200 feet.
