I consider myself to be a 100% skeptic, sometimes bordering on the cynical, however I try to be open minded and take on board as much info as I can before taking up an argument fully. I've recently been put on gardening leave from work and I've had a bit of time on my hands, so I decided to have a trawl to see what was out there on the web broadcasting paranormal drivel, sorry, fact based documentaries with a paranormal/supernatural theme.

The deluge of stations that you can get amazed me. There are even niche stations dealing specifically with a particular aspect of 'the unexplained' such as Planet-X, (popular at the moment for obvious reasons).

I decided to spend some time listening to some of these stations to see if there were any balanced opinions or even any discussions that were remotely plausible, purely because I am skeptical not totally closed.

My original thoughts about the type of people who comment on this stuff, or write columns dedicated to various aspects, were on the whole, less than positive, especially around their IQ. I certainly was not prepared for what I have found.

It would appear that seemingly rational human beings are discussing various themes, UFOs, Ghosts, Annunaki, etc ... with absolute conviction that these things are real, documented and totally accepted especially among the 'Illuminati' who are really running the the whole world and covering all this up.

I might sound naive, however if you are capable of forming a perfectly good argument, even if you are using flawed data, then surely you are capable of seeing the other side of the argument and picking big holes in it, and therefore maybe deciding that you won't broadcast it after all. I realise that these guys have an audience that will believe anything they say, so do they not realise they have a responsibility to educate and not re-inforce bad science or certainly bad science practise?

I believe that one of the worst cases of this was a couple of years ago when the catholic church were debating whether there is a purgatory. Isn't this rather like debating the colour of the wings on the fairies at the bottom of the garden?

As a further eye-opener, go by your local "new age" retailer (which may be called any number of things). The sheer volume and diversity of woo will astound most skeptics, as well as the (as noted) absolute conviction that these things are real.

Unfortunately, intelligence alone does not appear to be entirely effective in preventing silly beliefs. I blame evolution. Our brains work well enough for most purposes, but they're far from perfect.

I started up a chat with some of these guys, and when I spoke about JREF, they hadn't heard of it, when I mentioned Randi, they asked if he was still going ! Arghhhhh !

New Age covers a wide variety of disciplines from alternative medicine to goddess worship.

In fact, New Age incorporates any pursuit which allows individuals to express themselves in terms of self, the Creation and individual freedom.

New Age Requirements

To participate in the New Age, one merely has to have an interest and a desire to know more about the subject.

There is neither gospel nor dogma in the New Age. All that is necessary for one to be attuned to the New Age is an open mind and a positive attitude.

This combination allows us to examine universal truths independent of religion and these truths, this New Age, may very well lead to a more satisfying life on this plane and in other dimensions.

I experienced the magic of vortex energy myself. Intense. ;)

If you want to see someone try to poke holes in the other side try Mysterious Universe it's well produce and entertaining but their counter points against skeptics on their pet beliefs is something to be hold.

Never underestimate the power of marketing. The merchandising aspect of skepticism is limited, but you might be able to get a believer in ufos to treat their "ufo exhaust radiation burn" psorisasis with a healing crystal or two.
